First, there will be games from the original Xbox. Of course these are mostly SD games. Therefore if you have the 360 hooked up to an HDTV it might be a beneficial feature to have the resolutions upconverted to a higher resolution.

Second, there will be DVDs. Most DVDs these days are SD. Same kind of thing as original Xbox games.

Last, there will be games created just for the Xbox 360 that will output in SD. Now, Microsoft has said that they want all games for the 360 to be HD, so a developer will be going against Microsoft’s wishes if they create an original 360 game that’s not HD. And though my friend’s friend said that Microsoft might allow this in some cases, I must point out that this is third-hand info, and may very well be false.

As far as output resolutions go, developers can create games that use any output resolution, be it SD, 720p, or 1080i. Then the 360 will convert that game output to a signal that the user requests that is most compatible with his or her display, be it SD, 720p, or 1080i.

That makes it sound like the 360 is doing nothing more than upconverting the resolutions, much like the current HD premium channels such as HBO/ST etc. Whole it does look *better*, upcomversion to 720p or 1080i is NOT true SD, and I expect better.

I was real excited about the X-Box supporting HD, and it has what, 2-3 true 1080i games? Maybe a dozen 720p?

Unfortunatley, those of us with HDTV’s are probably still considered a minority.

I find this a little strange. Does this really mean that Microsoft could change the specification of the 360 after it’s been released?

The XBOX 360 is not out yet and even if it was… you see where the hard drive gose in? that is also for upgrades. people with 1080p TVs will go out and get this add on.
