OK! Cancel that! I'm NOT getting 5.1. What I'm getting, of course, is a stereo spread over all 5 speakers - not quite the same thing. SO I have invested in an €80 Optical-Coaxial converter which will allow me to output 5.1 sound that way into my Philips system. Because the lastest PS3 software has disabled DSD to DSTS conversion though, my sacds will not come through in surround, just in stereo - rather annoying, considering the first version of the software allowed it. But I already have an sacd player in my existing surround system, and the PS3 will send a decodable 5.1 surround signal through for DVDs and DTS discs... could be worse.

Just got a PS3 (40GB) for Xmas, and was sure I wouldn't be able to connect it to my Philips sacd surround system to get 5.1, as the PS3 optical output doesn't match the Philips digital in and there's no HDMI in on the Phillips... so (with little to no expectations) I connected the cable which came with the PS3 (not the HDMI cable, the other AV cable) to the aux L and R inputs on the back of the Philips... and guess what? I'm getting 5.1 surround from sacds and DVDs I'm playing on the PS3. No kidding. I have no idea how or why, but I am....

If you want to use DVI LCD monitor or TV to play PS3, you may try a kind of gameswitch box, it is used for this kind of situation and also build in the function of switch to another DVI interface computer. You may see www.green-box.com.tw for more intro. Hope this will help someone.

Great news and thanks for the info. I was really worried about the DVI - HDMI debate, thankfully I just need an adapter. It would be interesting if Microsoft would go the sega genesis CD route.
