Just to avoid any confusion, Sony has cleared up what’s going on with the 60GB HDD. Mr. Ken on Wednesday said that the HDD would be required, but did not say whether or not it would be included.
Sony has now said that yes, the 60GB HDD will come with each PS3 sold. And that it’s upgradable.

60GB HD? My little $50 downpayment for my preorder isn’t even going to cover the taxes on this thing is it?

Yes, just as I hoped! Sure it makes the thing more expensive, but then i’m probably going to upgrade it anyway. The media AND game experience is going to be that much better if it is standard. (my guess is that sony also included the harddisk to deal with load time from bluray disc)
