Playstation 3 Myths and Rumours

April 28th, 2006, Add a Comment

PS3 Portal has an article about some common misconceptions about the PS3, and especially about Blu-ray. Here are the misconceptions, check out the article for the answers.

  1. Blu-ray may get beaten by HD-DVD, and then my PS3 will be useless
  2. Blu-ray has a draconian copy-protection scheme
  3. The PS3 will cost $800, $900, $1000, etc…

Though it must be noted that their answer to #2 is slightly off. Sure AACS is used by both BD and HD DVD. But only BD uses a watermark on the actual disc to prevent piracy (called ROM Mark). BD also has BD+. So yes, BD does have more copy protection than HD DVD does. But for law-abiding citizens, that should really be a problem.

Revolution Renamed As Wii

April 27th, 2006, 13 Comments

Nintendo has finally revealed the name for it’s next gen gaming machine that was known as the Revolution: Nintendo Wii……

Erm maybe you need an explanation? Well here it is from the official Wii site:
Wii

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

I’ve got a few different emotions running through me at the moment. One of them is laughter. The other is it makes sense….

I could easily make a joke about urine but I think I’ll stay well clear of that area. At least they haven’t made claims about being the centre of the universe…

Your thoughts?

You can check out a cool vid for the Wii below:

PS3 to Shoot out of the Gate

April 27th, 2006, 3 Comments

PS3Sony expects to sell a boatload of PS3’s in its first few months on the market. Sony expects to sell 6 million PS3’s in the first four to five months. That compares to the 4.5 to 5.5 million that Microsoft expects to sell in the first seven months.

Is this a surprise that Sony can sell so many PS3’s? Hardly. I don’t really think it’s a question of whether or not Sony can sell them. It’s whether or not Sony can manufacture them. Sony aims to ramp up to one million units produced per month quite quickly. That’s a lot of units. That’s over 33 thousand units a day, starting from producing zero.

So the question becomes: can Sony ramp up that fast? Can they have a bunch of them available at launch, then continue pouring more of them into the market? At this point the market is a big sponge and will surely absorb whatever Sony can realistically throw at it. Especially if the PS3 launches with some good games.

Sony expects a hot start for the PlayStation 3
