Wii has Free Online Too |

Nintendo has said that that the Wii will have free online play as well. Via Gamasutra:

When asked about the pricing model for online use of the Wii, Fils-Aime commented that: “We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will not have to pay a subscription fee for. They’ll be able to enjoy that right out of the box. The Wii console is going to be Wi-Fi enabled, so essentially, you’ll be able to plug it in and go. It won’t have hidden fees or costs.”

* GASP *

Wait a sec! That’s not possible, is it? You can’t offer online play for free, can you? Software would be too expensive, or the service wouldn’t really be that good. Or something. Something bad. Something that makes it not possible, even though companies have been doing it for years.

Oh wait, yeah, right. I forgot. This is Nintendo. Nintendo can do it, but Sony can’t. Yeah, I forgot about that.

    Nintendo is not saying they are going to compete with Xbox Live though. They could just do what PS2 did last time and have the developers do their own thing.

    I hope Sony can somehow pull off a free online service that rivals Live. Since none of us know anything about Sony World or whatever they are calling it, we have no comparisons to make.

    I have been a Live subscriber since 3 months after the service launched in 2002 (I think). I have no problem paying for the service that delivers what Live does. It makes online gaming so easy a caveman could do it (yes the Geico reference). The $50 I have spent for online gaming has gone much farther than 3-4 $50 games I have bought.

    Sonys Online plans is the most important information to me. I want that info more than the PS3 itself (my purchase hinges on their service)
