Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD |

I saw a post about this, and it got me to thinking. Did you see the logos on the PS3?

Blu-ray Disc
DVD Video / ROM
Dolby TrueHD
Dolby Digital
DTS HD Master

How are they going to pull off the Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master thing? Well, they have a couple options. They’d have to either put it out on HDMI 1.3. Or they could decode internally and then convert it to PCM and put that out on the digital (optical) output. Or they could decode it internally and put it out on some analog output.

But I don’t think that you can have 5.1 (or 7.1) analog outputs on the multi-out.

Which is a real bummber. Because I don’t have a receiver with an HDMI input, much less an HDMI 1.3 one. Nor does it decode hi-res PCM digital over the digital output, AFAIK. It could do stereo 16bit / 44.1kHz like from a CD – but what receiver can’t? But it does have analog 5.1 inputs. So it would be nice if the PS3 could put out 5.1 analog.

  • OT:

    Good news 😀

My mom helps my financing my PS3 for launch !! Looks like I’ll be ready by then !!

    Back to topic…

I dont care much about all that crappy 7.1 and stuff… My CAT (German AV receiver producer) accepts PCM (from DVD Audio… so I think its up to 24bit 96khz and all that stuff), Dolby Digital and DTS, which for me, is more than enough (My normal stereo is… well only stereo…). I am not willing to get a new receiver just yet.

I just hope, I can get 5.1 sound via toslink… (I have no idea what Blu Ray specifies there…)

  • Toslink does PCM. It’s just a question of whether or not it does 5.1 PCM, which I think it does. But does your receiver accept it?

  • darrin

I’m no AV expert, but I’m pretty sure toslink does 5.1. My DVD and PS2 are both connected to my receiver vis toslink and I get full rear channel separation on titles that support that.

I want to know if PS3 will be able to output game video in xvYCC or deep color over HDMI. I’d guess no on the former and yes on the latter.

Congratz, Segitz on securing the PS3 financing.

  • Well, yeah, Toslink does 5.1 if you’re using DTS or DD. But what about 5.1 PCM digital audio?

  • I dont know, how that is specified… IIRC NONE of my DVDs even have a 5.1 PCM sound (I think German DVDs dont do that, my only DVD that has less than Dolby is Dune, which only has PCM Stereo…)…

Wikipedia Germany says, that Multichannel PCM is specified, but there’s no known device capable of doing so (in consumer electronics that is).

So… I really doubt mine can do it :D. But DTS or Dolby 5.1 is more than enough for me !!
