European PS3 Launch Delayed! |

Bad news for all you Europeans out there! Sony has delayed the launch of the PS3 in all PAL territories. Here is the press release:

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3. No change in launch date for Japan and North America

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.

Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.

The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.

The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

So, there’s a new March 2007 launch date for PAL territories. That’s a five month delay. While there have been a lot of rumours floating around about the blue laser diode thing, they were just that – rumours. Until now. I guess some rumours turn out to be true. I know two people especially who will be really ticked… 🙁

Thanks to Andreas for sending this in.

New March 2007 Launch Date for the PS3

That’s really gutting. Makes me very tempted to import, since I know people in the US, but I assume getting it to the UK would cause all sorts of duty taxes and difficulties.

  • What I dont get (a little bit at least) is…

Sony says, they cant produce enough laser diodes… Ok, thats an argument which I cant debunk… But they also say, they will STILL get to 6million at the end of fiscal year 2007 (ends 31. march 07). So that number is “on track” so to say…

I am not that pissed off, but I am VERY disappointed of Sony! Why AGAIN (see PSP) does Europe have to suffer a delay?

I an Interview they said, Europe is VERY vital to their economy, as the US and Japan markets dont grow anymore…

I think, the preorders in Europe just werent good enough (seeing that Sony still says 6 million till march), so they rearranged the launch to the more “big” markets and all… So then, were does my Christmasmoney go to then? (I have my 25th birthday in April… so no biggy here)

  • I’m a little dissapointed but I’m looking on the bright side, which I’ll reveal in more detail in a separate post later this week or at the weekend.

  • Yeah, and we can look at all the reviewed games before we buy them and then decide, which games we’ll buy… AND we will have a bigger launch title list!!

  • So you’re a glass is half-full kind of guy then? 🙂

I had planned to buy the console in jan-feb anyway, så this is not as bad as it could’ve been. But still… I’m disapointed.

    In other news:
I’m from Norway, and on the 2nd biggest website here there was a poll (in the article about the delay) about what console people was going to have, the results is as follows:

    PlayStation 3
    616 (41.2 %)
    Xbox 360
    168 (11.2 %)
    214 (14.3 %)
    PS3 and Wii
    101 (6.8 %)
    PS3 and Xbox 360
    133 (8.9 %)
    Xbox 360 and Wii
    113 (7.6 %)
    All three
    77 (5.2 %)
    73 (4.9 %)

This is kind of shocking to me, even in an article about the DELAY of the console PS3 scores this high! I had the feeling people was kind of leaning to 360.

If that was actual sales, the console allocation would be:
    PS3 – 48,2%
    360 – 25,2%
    505 – 26,3%

  • Martin Hansen

    505 = Wii

  • Ruby

    NO ploblem.
    I import PS3 from Japan.
The order can have been done here.
