Six 1080p PS3 Games at TGS |

Remember when a certain Microsoft executive (who shall remain nameless) (because I forget his name) said that we won’t be seeing any 1080p games this year? Sony must have taken that as a challenge, because at TGS there were six playable games in 1080p:

  • Lair
  • Mobile Suit Gundam
  • Virtua Tennis 3
  • Gran Turismo HD
  • Ridge Racer 7
  • NBA ’07

While I won’t be having any 1080p action in my life any time soon, 1080p HDTV’s are selling like hotcakes. So all those 1080p HDTV owners who pick up a PS3 will be quite pleased. I hope to be in those ranks one day, but my next project is hardwood floors, not a new HDTV. 🙁

  • From those titles, Lair and Gundam Suit are the ones I’m looking forward to the most.

Just as an aside I hear 1080p support from games is good news even if you only own a 720p/1080i set. Apparently the downscaling of the images creates an anti-aliasing effect. In plain English that would mean that a 720p TV playing a 1080p game should look a lot smoother with fewer jaggies!

That IS good news Tom 🙂

You DO NOT NEED 1080p unless you are buying an HDTV OVER 50″!!!!! Even at 50″ that is a stretch. Please people do some research before you waste all that money on a TV that has no broadcasts and really no benefit unless you are a HUGE movie buff. When I bought my 50″ I looked at the SXRD Sony. It is a Nice HDTV, but both tvs being 50″, I could have bought almost 3 of my tvs compared to 1 1080p. Knowing what I did I saved myself the $2500.

Also I have seen websites that have done all the math and they basically show that the PS3 will not be able to do 1080p because the hardware cannot handle it. If a game is in 1080p it is not going to have as much as a 720p. Phil Harrison has even said that their are 720p games that will look better than 1080p games. That should tell you something right there.

The PS3 is going to be a great machine but I really don’t agree with how they are marketing it. All of the new technology this generation is way above the average consumer. BR, HDTV, Cell- most people don’t have the slightest clue what any of them are and they are listening to marketing to get their informartion. Then they go to Circuit City or Best Buy to have some guy making $7.00/hr who also knows nothing about the new technology (These stores tell their employees what to push) tell them what to buy.

Tom what you said I have also heard, but if the game will have less in it just to run at 1080p than I don’t care.

I have a 24″ widescreen LCD monitor and it is 1080P HDCP compliant (this means that at 1080P there is a thin black line at the top and bottom of the screen because the native resolution of the LCD is 1200 not 1080). Games at 1080P look better than at 720p even when a 1080P game is forced to 720P through the PS3 settings… period!
