This is quite a relief. I personally dont think that the life of the battery will be much of an issue, batteries in smaller devices such as these controllers last a pretty long time, unlike laptop batteries.

Maybe they will just institute a program with retailers that if someone brings in a dead pad you get $20 off a new one (or some other price they deem fair). I wouldn't worry to much about it but batteries going bad is going to be a problem. How much of one is unseen, but If people use the system for 5-7 years regularly controllers will die.

I am still hoping that they release a new controller. I like FPS games and the Dual Shock controller sucked. Certain game types are hard to play with the Dual Shock and a new controller is really important to me. I hope Sony releases a new controller, but if they don't I hope a 3rd party company does. I wasn't thrilled about the boomerang controller, but atleast it looked more ergonomic.

Have you ever used REALLY good batteries? They usually live pretty pretty long! I mean 5 years long! Sony Batteries ARE good.

Notebook batteries are pretty much getting screwed, everytime you use them/load them.

I have been into RC Car driving nearly all my life and these batteries, if handled correctly, last longer than 5 years!

I dont think, that the batteries will be a real problem in the near future. Maybe its like with Gary, that the controller dies before the batteries. My first controller from a near launch PS2 still works VERY well (I dont play too much).

I dont think, this will be a problem at all. These controllers dont need that much power, arent used 24/7 (except maybe some hardcore gamers, which should be able to afford a new controller) and the batteries need much less "watt/kg" (high capacity suffers lifetime!).

"I’m 99% certain, just from the fact that Sony needs to make money, that it won’t be free. As a matter of fact, my guess is that it will be only a slight savings over buying a new one. But it’s just a guess - we don’t know anything for sure at this point. "

I think that is a good analysis Henning.

I'm not telling you nothing the spokesperson is.

And nothing was mentioned whether it would be free or not.

When Sony announce official plans for what they will do to exchange dead controllers with new ones we can only speculate.

My BS detector is working overtime on this one...You are telling me that Sony is going to start exchanging controllers when the batteries die? Controllers are a profit center for Sony and MS. I will believe it - ONLY when I see it.

My guess - some PR person knows it will be a couple years before Sony has to put up, so she just tired to score some PR points.

...I can just hear the fanboys now...."yeah but Sony is going to give us free controllers if ours die!" - Right. ;)

I've had my PSP since the japanese launch and the battery works just fine. I'd imagine the batteries in these controllers will last 3+ years at least.

If they use their own batteries once they fail they will burn the evidence so you can't get another one? ;-)
