It’s very simple to join our team. Once you’ve launched the Folding@Home program, just press the triangle button to bring up the Options panel, select “Identity”, and then select “Join an exiting team”. After that, just enter PS3Blog.net’s team number 55054. And that’s it, your now part of the team. To get more points on your PS3, choose the advanced option in the settings.
Here is a nice option for people that use the remote play option of the PS3. Just start remote play and start the Folding@home app. Then you can turn off your PSP, and the folding@home app will continue. Then when you try to connect again via remote play you will get the folding@home screen. From there you can go back to XMB if you wish.
Even PC users can join the team. I have my work PC running the folding@home software as well. You can download the PC version here.
For those who are yet unfamiliar with the term, Folding@Home is a project which was started by researchers from Stanford University. The project involves the study of protein folding which has been thought to be the root of diseases such as Alzheimer s Disease, Parkinson s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, cystic fibrosis, and some types of cancer. The aim of the project is to help the researchers to build models and simulations of these proteins by lending them some CPU power and a bit of bandwidth.

If you want your PS3 to automatically start Folding when it is idle, follow these steps:
Select the Folding@Home icon from the XMB.
Press Triangle
Select Auto-Start
Press Left, and select how long your PS3 should be idle before running F@H

I really like the map. Though i think that it’s a bit misleading. Detroit looks like it’s go thousands of users and Toronto has a relative few. Maybe it’s the way the ISP’s register. I’d love this feature to be in HOME. Imagine if every person in your friend list was graphically displayed on the map that was the background of the XMB. I’d put in my GPS co-ordinates to see this. If my friends lit up that would be very cool. I like the “community of man” “Earth is just one big community” sense you get while looking at it. The zoom in could be greater. So i could see my street. if they do it in HOME they could put real satellite weather images on there as well.

It’s pretty crazy how about 1% of the amount of PS3’s are supplying nearly 80 of the total power on this project.
Just goes to show you that the Cell can kick ass at crunching numbers. With the way the Cell can take on the GPU physics to free up cycles. We can get some insane amount of growth in the future.

Wow, the increase in productivity is astounding. I hope this data can make a difference.

I just hope that most continue to use this. Not just a pop to check it out and never run it again.

Sporty you can turn on the idle feature so that the folding happens whenever your PS3 is idle. And I agree with your earlier statement. 25000 PS3’s supplying about half a petaflop of crunching. Some of the larger PS3 groups are really going to rocket up the rankings. Ours already has cracked the top 10,000. 7,000 something last I checked. Give it another week and we’ll wee where we are. And I think we only have 25 ps3’s working together.

Just started a few hours ago. I turned my PS3 off now, but I hope to contribute when i can. Right now my name’s techfreak98, (made a mistake) so i hope to change it to the traditional coolcool23.
Its great to see the ps3 havin this kind of impact. Hopefully they can reach the petaflop mark!!! if only a few hundred more were running out of the millions that sony has shipped, it would be!
