Rumble Grumble Rumble

Sony and Immersion are currently in talks about bringing rumble back to the PS3. While they don’t explicitly state that the SIXAXIS controller will be getting rumble, that’s what everybody assumes.

For the purposes of this article, I’ll assume so as well. I just hope we’re all correct!

When I heard that Sony and Immersion had kissed and made up, I started to think about what they could do that’s different. Sure we want rumble back in the SIXAXIS. But surely there is room for improvement? How about four or five rumble actuators (is that the word?) so that you can feel rumble go left to right and front to back (and vice versa, and diagonally, etc)? What about more flexibility in the feel of the rumble? Sharp versus dull, etc. What about…? Actually, I only thought of those two things.

Do you think that Sony will be doing anything fancy with their new rumble? Or are they going to go with the same old rumble we’ve known before?

By the way, I made a poll about this!

Old poll results:

How well did Sony execute the European launch?

* Great!: 56% (189)
* Good: 27% (91)
* Shoulda been better: 11% (37)
* Terrible: 7% (23)

    I’ve been arguing for a 3 dimensional rumble for about a year now. There is no reason why we can’t have direction oriented rumble with todays technology. It may need a cord..but so be it.

    That would be interesting, They could do that with 4 or 5 motors. Although battery life would be crap probably.

    Personally. I think if they do reintroduce it, it wont be much different then what dual shock 2 was. Although with the larger demand on the rechargeable battery, I think a recharging cradle would be nice.

    you guys don’t care that we’ll have to buy all new controllers? Will there be any trade in? Can I send my controllers to get rumble controllers?
