That way you could skip the horrible missions and concentrate on the story related ones. You're forced to do all the missions on the map before new ones start popping up. A terrible design flaw. The game comes down to a few basic weaknesses that could easily have been fixed. The enemies block far too much, and are given far too much health. You find yourself hopelessly button mashing to beat the tougher bosses. Spider-Man 2 was a great game, this is an average game. I recommend you rent or wait for this game to hit the bargain bin.
