Star Wars on Blu-ray?

If you were to ask me what my favourite movie is, I’d have to say Star Wars. That hasn’t wavered since I saw the movie back in 1977 as an 8-year-old boy. The only thing that’s wavered is which Star Wars movie I liked best. First the original, of course. Then RotJ was my favourite. Then ESB. And you can call be names if you want, but I thought that AotC was a very good movie – I enjoyed that one a lot. I have to admit that TPM is the weakest of the bunch.

But I’ll tell you one thing. The Star Wars sextet are the only movies I’ll be repurchasing on Blu-ray.

And Amazon has them listed on their site!

It not official by any means, but I’ve been waiting for these movies in HD for a long time. I don’t care if they’re stripped-down versions either, because I find myself caring less and less for the extra features anyway.

Here’s hoping they come out soon!

    Man you are old^^

Not even my older brother (turning 30 in August) can reach your age^^

But, I would have said SW was my favourite movie some years ago, but not this has changed quite a bit. Mine would be Fight Club (before all, this IS the best movie ever made up to date), Seven and many other good thrillers (too lazy to name them).

As I just read on Heise.de (german Newssite, which also release the c’t, the major IT mag), Universal supposedly contracted the Blu Ray camp, thus leaving the HD DVD camp…

If this happens, BD has won!

If Universal decides to adopt Blu-ray, that would indeed be the end of HD DVD.

Now to scour the net for news….

IF Star B…I mean Star Wars does become exclusive to Blu-ray then I think it’s a major coup.

I want to know when TV series are coming to Blu-ray because that’s what I mainly buy. I rarely buy films anymore and if I do it’s mainly Martial Art films and training DVDs.

Give me Scrubs, Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, Friends, Buffy and Angel on BD please!!

    Says:

Yeah but all those shows are standard definition. There’s no benefit having a BD version over a DVD version.

StarWars is one of the only oldies I would buy in HD too… along with Matrix maybe (only the first)… how geeky is that? :)

yes.. yes … I need more bluray movies !

Agreed. I hope they do the first movie justice and make the copy the non “Greedo shoots first” copy. i’d also like to see some great BR extras. Hell, get Kevin Smith to make a documentary.
The only other movies i will rebuy in Bluray will be. The Matrix 1, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. , Aliens, Raiders Quadrilogy, Ace Ventura, The Incredibles and possibly every Pixar movie.

There’s been rumors since Blu-Ray captured 60% of the market that Universal is only giving HD-DVD till the end of the year to turn it around. This last week HD-DVD dropped to 29%

But on the Star wars idea. I think around September we should be hearing something if they are going to do a HD release this early. 30 year anniversary’s coming up and all.

Some people say Lucas wont adopt a new format till it’s proven since he waited so long on DVD. I think they are just pretending to know more then they do really since he Adopted Laser so soon and backed LD so hard.

    Star Wars i HD??!!?
Great! the force is truly strong..

btw, Henning, EPB is the greatest SW-movie.

Gary, we have one thing in common here^^

I own some Hapkido DVDs (mostly imported from Japan and Hong Kong as you dont find them anywhere here anyways)^^

Anyways, here’s the link (albeit in German) that says, rumor has it that Universal will switch/adopt Blu Ray . And a babelfished one too (lol, a hp DVD^^)

    Okay, I’ll bite. What’s EPB?

I would say, the Empire Strikes Back (EmPire strikes Back)^^

Your link and the Pioneer reps is new and not connected to the End of year benchmark that’s been going around since march that I was talking about.

If it is true then the format war is over as soon as Universal confirms it neutrality or switching completely since BD will have every major studio, on top of 70% of the market.

If not then it drags on till end of the year at the soonest unless HD-DVD pull out a miracle.

If the Universal story is true then Star wars would be a lot safer release and more likely. However, I’m not calling it a done deal till it’s confirmed.

I’ve never heard of EPB, I was thinking of the Ewoks thing but that’s EwoK Adventure so doesn’t fit either

    Sorry guys!
I was typing in the dark.. EPB.. lol..
The correct movie is (naturally) Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

If these movies are released on BD, I will buy an 1080p TV ;-)

I fully agree about AOTC being an enjoyable movie and ROTS is great too.
But the best is definitely ESB – best writing, best action set pieces and it is the darkest and tensest of all six.
    Love it.
Hope the Blu-ray rumours are true.
Lucas loves his sound quality and uncompressed sound on Blu-ray would be great.
