This is a major manufacturing error, or intended decision, made by Sony. Comparisons have been made in the same environment and all tested PS3:s does not behave in the same way. Some are loud (higher fan speeds), some are the "quiet as a mouse" ones with low fan speeds. If the time comes when my DVD is louder than the PS3, I'd bounce of joy. For now, the media center experience on the PS3 is just "meh...", since it has the same sound level has a computer, hairdryer or similar. A swedish tech magazine is making an article about this phenomena as we speak, comparing one of their test ("quiet as a mouse") machines with a noisy one sent in from one of us "victims" in Sweden. Hopefully this will get some attention soon... And I refuse to send in my machine and wait 8 weeks just to get another noisy one (This has actually happened). If the PS3 just would shut the h-ll up, I'd be 100% satisfied with my purchase. To bobeotm:

On many forums they say vertical gets rid of heat more efficiently that horizontal, not to mention having it in a well vented space will also help. I barely hear my brothers, even when Im doing very quiet xmb stuff. My DVD player is actually louder than his ps3 on most ocassions. It depends on the type of situation you have the PS3 in. My intention was to use it as a replacement for my DVD-player and to use it as a media center / Blu-ray player. With fans kicking in after 20 mins to "level 3", it is not enjoyable watching movies, pictures or whatever. Tons of people in Sweden are having the same problems. Sony's response is nothing... Exchanging units just results in getting another PS3 with the same behaviour. I dunno how all the reviewers could say it was silent? I called the Playstation Hotline, and they told me about other simular complains, but no offisial statement from Sony. All I could do was to send them the ols one, and get a new. -And this one is much better! But, yeah, I pitty 360owners if the noise is what they say it is.. And I want a bigger HDD for my PS3, so I can store TV series and movies. However, with the latest firmware, I might as well stream it from my PC. But in acouple of years with PSN... Maybe ;-) About the noise…
