To bobeotm:

No, this is not an issue of placement. This is a major manufacturing error, or intended decision, made by Sony. Comparisons have been made in the same environment and all tested PS3:s does not behave in the same way. Some are loud (higher fan speeds), some are the "quiet as a mouse" ones with low fan speeds.

If the time comes when my DVD is louder than the PS3, I'd bounce of joy. For now, the media center experience on the PS3 is just "meh...", since it has the same sound level has a computer, hairdryer or similar.

A swedish tech magazine is making an article about this phenomena as we speak, comparing one of their test ("quiet as a mouse") machines with a noisy one sent in from one of us "victims" in Sweden.

Hopefully this will get some attention soon... And I refuse to send in my machine and wait 8 weeks just to get another noisy one (This has actually happened).

If the PS3 just would shut the h-ll up, I'd be 100% satisfied with my purchase.

It depends on the type of situation you have the PS3 in. On many forums they say vertical gets rid of heat more efficiently that horizontal, not to mention having it in a well vented space will also help. I barely hear my brothers, even when Im doing very quiet xmb stuff. My DVD player is actually louder than his ps3 on most ocassions.

I agree with Henning saying it is way too loud. My intention was to use it as a replacement for my DVD-player and to use it as a media center / Blu-ray player. With fans kicking in after 20 mins to "level 3", it is not enjoyable watching movies, pictures or whatever.

Tons of people in Sweden are having the same problems. Sony's response is nothing... Exchanging units just results in getting another PS3 with the same behaviour. I dunno how all the reviewers could say it was silent? "Quiet as a mouse" etc. The PS3 sound is comparable to my computer...

But yeah, the drive looks cool, but I also doubt it will affect noise/heat in any way...

About the noise...
I had a problem noise-problem with my first PS3. After about a minute, all the fans kicked in, and would no go down. And this was at the XMB!
I called the Playstation Hotline, and they told me about other simular complains, but no offisial statement from Sony. All I could do was to send them the ols one, and get a new. -And this one is much better! But, yeah, I pitty 360owners if the noise is what they say it is..

And I want a bigger HDD for my PS3, so I can store TV series and movies. However, with the latest firmware, I might as well stream it from my PC.
But in acouple of years with PSN... Maybe ;-)

Hm, my PS3 is not loud at all...

A 2.5'' HDD has a VERY low TDP, something in the lines of 2-5 Watts. I do not think, that that is the culprit at all.

The only thing I noticed with regards to noise and heat with my PS3 is that when I close the door on my entertainment center. Because there is not enough space for the air to circulate the PS3 gets insanely loud and heats to tremendous temps. SO when I have it in use I just leave the door open other wise I close the door to prevent dust from building up. I haven't found a need to switch out the hard drive yet because I'm not using up that much space right now I figure as soon as PSN ramps up this summer and more games come out in the fall I might need to do that.

Cell & RSX are likely the primary source of heat, 2.5" HDD are eating no more than a couple of watts (and often less).

On the heat/noise, I've noticed that when running f@h, my PS3 more silent and blowing noticeably cooler air when the TV is off than when it's turned off (I'm using an HDMI connection), so I suspect the RSX could be responsible for quite a bit of the PS3 heat.

I think the noise is related to burden on the Cell. When I launch Folding@Home the PS3 always becomes louder almost immediately. Also, in one scene in "Resistance" that featured lots of enemies (thus computations) it kicked up.

Funny you mention how quiet it is, because at its loudest it sounds like there is a hair dryer in the room. If the 360 is worse still than that, geez...
