GC 2007: Boring! Except… CoD4 Dated

Well, the official Sony press event at the Leipzip Games Conference is over and I have to say that I’m totally underwhelmed. There were definitely no fireworks of any kind if you’re a North American or Japanese PS3 owner. And only a small one if you’re in Europe. They did talk about the PSP a lot with their Go!Explorer, Go!Messenger, and Go!Whatever… (I forget the last one). Ah well. There’s always the TGS to look forward to…

But if you’re looking for interesting GC news, look over to Activision. They announced that Call of Duty 4 for the PLAYSTATION 3 (and 360, PC, and DS) will be released on November 5th, 2007. Burn that date firmly in your brains boys and girls, because that’s FPS NIRVANA day.

Yes, that was a disappointment. PlayTV was mildly interesting, but that was it. No music/video service. No new games or major unveilings or big third party deals (the soccer news wasn’t nothing but I’m not into that).

I would have expected a low-key show like this, if it weren’t for David Reeves promising peak season fireworks and hinting that it would be better than E3. E3 was a surprise home run, this was nothing in comparison. I’m expecting TGS will be somewhere in between.

inspectre, sure that’s a ton of amazing upcoming content, but we’ve heard about all of it before.

E3 had new announcements: games we hadn’t heard of (Echochrome), massive unveilings of big-name games that we haven’t seen a peep from in two whole years (Killzone), surprising exclusivity deals (NCSoft, MGS4, UT3, Haze)… This conference had zero surprises.

Henning, didn’t we already know about the COD4 11/5 release date? That’s been on IGN’s site for at least several weeks now.

So you all thought the PS3 DVR was underwelming? Of course its only currently for europe, due to the most areas using digital as opposed to analog as the primary method of transmitting tv signals. The video download service for psp is also quite nice. We have to keep in mind this is a convention for EUROPE, so everything is eurocentric.

I already have a DVR. And besides, Sony’s solution won’t be able to record my digital TV content because Rogers protects it. (A common problem here in Canada. There’s no CableCARD support here, unlike the States.) So it would only be good for my analog channels. So even if it is released in NA, I won’t be getting it.

Darrin: it’s been the speculated release date, but it hadn’t been confirmed officially, AFAIK.
