60GB PS3 for $399

Derrick sent me this photo showing a 60GB PS3 going for just $399 (after mail-in rebate) at Hastings. Why bother with the 40GB at this price?

Keep in mind, I took this picture in Kerrville Tx, and the experation date of the deal is 11-17-07. Some Hastings if you call them will say that they don’t have this deal but they have to honor it. Take them a printout of this picture or have them call the Kerrville Hastings. They have to HONOR the deal.

That’s a really sweet deal. Too bad I already have mine. :)

  3. liar Says:

The only reason I can think of is the 40GB is 65nm and will be even quieter for the home movie buffs that can hear the fan on the 60GB.

  4. derrickgott007 Says:

Liar, you are going to hear a fan no matter what the chip size…..chip size is irrelevant nowadays. I’m tired of hearing the chip size excuse. No matter what the PS3 is hands down way quieter than the junkbox.

  5. liar Says:

Derrick I’m on your side :) . The power requirements have been reduced, the heat generated will be less ..therefore the fan will be on less often and likely to stay on low level even during upscaling of DVD’s etc.

It has never been noticeable to me but some video/audio folks want almost complete silence during quiet scenes…the 40gb is good news for those folks that haven’t bought a PS3 over this single issue. And they are out there..that’s why I said it’s the only reason I can see given that price for the 60GB. Cool.

  6. derrickgott007 Says:

Does power requirements really matter?? If someone fears they can’t afford the power the PS3 uses, should they even be spending that much to buy the PS3??

  7. liar Says:

@Derrick, it wasn’t about the power/electricity costs..that was more red herring FUD from the MS camp.

Less power being drawn, less heat, less fan speed required to keep the system cool = quieter system. It’s apparently .5-.8 Sones which is very very quiet.
