Western Digital just came out with a 320GB 2.5-inch Scorpio SATA hard drive! It runs at 5400 RPM and it runs $200. I love how you can use any SATA hard drive in the PS3. A lot of freedom there.
If I didn’t already have a 160 GB hard drive in my PS3 I’d be very tempted to get this! I still have my 60 GB hard drive with Linux on it, but I rarely use Linux so the extra drive just sits in a box most of the time. I just don’t like the idea of putting Linux (takes up 10GB) on my main PS3 drive and not really being used. But if I had a 320GB I’d put Linux on it

Thats a decent price too. I got a Samsung 250 gig for 164 dollars myself and slapped it in my PS3.

how painful is it to move your files over to the new drive? such as your downloaded games? I know the back up tool is supposedly easy to use via the usb back, and restore. what has everyone’s experience been with this?

Can I connect Ps3′s own 60gb hd to my desktop pc? A very noobie question, but hey.

I’ve done this once, and from what I remember it kept everything. Games, video, music, photos, game saves, etc. But I usually back up my game saves to a pro duo memory card just in case. But it’s been almost a year since I did the hard drive back up, so I can’t remember clearly. Has anybody else done the hard drive back up recently?

Its fairly simple just takes a while. When i did my swap, I think I was backing up 35 gigs of info. My portable HDD is 160 gig FAT32 so it was easy. Took about 45min to an hour to back up then another 45 min to an hour to load it back onto the new hard drive.

How do I transfer all the stuff on my hard drive I have now to the new one if I buy one?? Do I have to shell out money for an external drive to transfer it all to also??

Ya you’ll need to get a external usb hard drive. Or you could just back up your save data to a memory card (pro duo, CF, etc.) But you would need to download all your stuff from the PS store again, but you wouldn’t have to pay for it again.

yea if you have a portable HDD, then you dont have to redownload anything or set up your accounts…it all transfers nicely.

Here how to back up your PS3 HDD
I posted this information previously long time ago, it’s my personal experience.
1) Get your self an External Hard drive to backup your original PS3 HDD.
In my case I used (MAXTOR ONETOUCH III, MINI EDITION 80GB, FAT32)
2) Make sure your External Hard Drive is (FAT32 File System Mode) or your PS3 wont Recognize it. If it’s not,,,,,,, it’s easy,,,,,,, just convert it to FAT32 (file system) By Partitiion Magice software. no harm done here.
3) Plug in your External HDD and your PS3 will automatically recognize it as another storage device.
4) From the home menu, select (Settings) >>>>> then >>>>> select (System Settings)>>>>> then >>>>> select (Backup Utility) >>>>> then >>>>> select (Back Up)
PS3 will ask you if you want to backup your data into External Hard Drive,,,,
Select YES,,,,,,,,,
In my case, since I didn’t have a lot of data, the whole process took about 10 munites.
OK ,,,,,,,,, the system has backup all the data including my Login information plus the password………
I mean ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL my data went back to where I left them,
My Login Information was backed up.
My flOw Game was backed up
My Pictures too.
My Heavenly Sword Demo was Backed up as well.
My Grand Turismo HD too
My Music went back to its place as well.
Hope that could help you.
