Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.1 | PS3Blog.net

Apparently, a PS3 Firmware 2.1 page was reportedly spotted (thanks ehandlr) on the official Spanish PS3 site. Since then, the page has been pulled. However, the included feature list and “voice changer” screenshot seem legitimate.

Features:

  • Voice Changer
  • DivX + VC-1 WMV support added
  • Blu-Ray 1.1 Support

Is this real? When should we see this?

    We’ll see it tomorrow night.

Firmware updates usually been on tuesday nights.

  2. It was confirmed but site was deleted without reason?

An update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 2.10 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 2.10, you will need a minimum 120Mb of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

  3. DivX… me happy!

  4. I hope TVercity updates pretty fast also. I know when 360 got Divx the quality went up substantially on playback natively from transcoding on the fly.

I’d rather use my PS3 for all things media if possible.

  5. Hmm… ordinarily, the stated inclusion of WMV would make me dubious, but still… we shall see!

  6. VC-1 has been adopted by Blu-Ray as a standard along with AVC. So it’s inclusion isn’t really that surprising

  7. Well, sweet, It played everything I’ve thrown at it so far.

Quality is vastly improved. Tried WMP11 and TVercity with transcoding set to off and haven’t had a single file fail so far. Even has thumbnail shots of the videos now, where before it didn’t.
