Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai
Posted by Blackstaffer in Talk on May 3rd, 2007
Kaz Hirai is the new big boss at Sony Computer Entertainment. Ken Kutaragi is leaving Sony – though he’ll still be an honourary chairman, he won’t have any day-to-day dealings with Sony. So Mr Kaz Hirai will be calling all the PlayStation shots from now on. This article discusses the transition. I will be focusing on the task set before Mr. Hirai.
What kind of environment does he start with? The PS3 is trailing both the Wii and the 360 in sales. There hasn’t been that many exclusive PS3 titles released since launch. And non-exclusive titles often look better on the 360 (Splinter Cell, FEAR) or are crippled on the PS3 (Call of Duty 3). The PS3 controller has tilt, but no rumble. And the PS3 costs $600 versus the 360′s $300, $400, and $480 (in North America).
So where does Mr. Hirai go from here?
First of all, I hope that his thinking isn’t in line with the official party line. Every comment we hear from Sony is that they’re happy with the way things are going with respect to the PS3. Of course they have to say that. I just hope they don’t think it. Sony is obviously last in line in the new generation, and they need to step up with some bold initiatives to bring them to the front.
PlayStation Home is a good start. But that’s all it is – a start. Will developers embrace Home and its achievements system? Sony better make sure that they do. Home seems to be Sony’s ace and it better pay off.
But the games is where things really count, and they better hit home runs with Heavenly Sword, Killzone, GT5, and other exclusives. Hirai is famous for his deal-making abilities, so he better put them to good use getting more exclusives for his favourite platform.
And what should he do about rumble? (1) Include it in new controllers? Most assuredly. (2) Have some advanced new rumble features the competition doesn’t have? They better! (3) Come out as quickly as possible? That would be the third of the three wise decisions needed to be made here. Mr. Hirai better do all those things, and not apologize for it either. It would be nice if Sony could help me replace my existing controllers with rumble ones, but I’m realistic enough to expect no help from Sony there. I bought them knowing full well they didn’t have rumble.
Of course the last question is just what Kaz should do about the PS3′s price. I think that Sony doesn’t need to decrease the price just yet. But in time for the Christmas shopping season the price should be reduced to $449. That’s right – cheaper than the most expensive 360. The price is a major stumbling block for many buyers, and that block needs to be removed.
So Mr. Hirai has a lot of work to do when it come to Home, games, rumble, and price. I’m probably missing some things, and I certainly hope that Hirai has some things up his sleaves that we don’t know about. What other challenges does Mr. Hirai need to solve?
LucasArts Presents: Fracture
Posted by Blackstaffer in F, PS3 software on May 3rd, 2007
“The setting is the future, circa 2161. We find ourselves in a dried out San Francisco Bay, under the Golden Gate Bridge, in pitched battle between the so-called Atlantic Alliance–a consortium of eastern American states and several European nations–and the Republic of Pacifica, a teaming of western American states and several Asian nations.”
This is the setting for LucasArts’ new first-person shooter called Fracture. If you watch the video below, you’ll see that earth-deformation is a big deal in this game. Lob an ground-grenade, and the ground wells up in waves, or a menhir shudders up into the sky. Or bits of blast dirt fling themselves about.
This makes for an interesting idea. But being a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy, I’ll wait for more coverage before making up MY mind. Oh yeah – this game is coming out for the PS3 and 360 sometime in 2008.
[edit by Gary] I thought you guys might be interested in seeing some gameplay footage of Fracture. It looks pretty cool and it puts some of the crazy weapons in Ratchet & Clank to shame. One to keep an eye on.
Yellow Dog Linux now has Wi-Fi

Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) has been updated to v5.0.1. It can now access the built in Wi-Fi in the 60 GB Version of the PLAYSTATION 3.
This is one of the main reasons I haven’t installed YDL on my primary hard drive, which is a 160 GB. I do have YDL on the 60 GB that came with the PS3 just to test it out. I like the freedom of Wi-Fi. And before this update I couldn’t use the Wi-Fi in the PS3, so I rarely used it. Now I’ll use it more.
Yellow Dog Linux v5.0.1 offers:
– Support for the Sony PS3.
– More than 500 updated packages.
– Built-in Wi-Fi now supported.
– USB printers fixed.
– The bootloader is now included on the DVD.
DMC4 Preview and Video

If you’re reading this before you’ve clicked play on the video below, then there’s something wrong with you. Seriously. Click play and drool over what is on display.
“Devil May Cry 4 is an action game” No kidding!
I’m not pleased with his comment that they have made the game easier. DMC3 was a lot easier than DMC1 but it seems they are pandering towards a new audience with DMC4. Still, from what I’ve seen of DMC4 and having played Ninja Gaiden Sigma, DMC4 is going to be the standout action game on PS3 this year.
IGN.com also has a preview of DMC4 and they have revealed a couple of new bits of info. Firstly, Nero can grab items through bars or barriers once he has acquired an item called the “Evil Legacy”. He can also perform a move known as the “Grim Grip” which he can use to travel between highlighted portals as seen in this video. Using the Grim Grip should allow for you to choose different routes through some areas of Fortuna.
Check out IGN’s preview at the link below. You’ll also find that the Official DMC4 Website has been updated to include the 360 logo, with no new content at all. I don’t know how I’m going to afford all the quality games i have my eye on later this year but DMC4 is a definite buy.

Well the Home Beta has finally started. Sadly none of the writers here got in. Did any of the PS3Blog.net readers get in? They’ll open up the beta again sometime in summer. So keep a eye on this site – homebetatrial.com.
