Sony’s Quaterly Financials
Sony just released their quarterly financial report for calendar Q4 2007, which is fiscal Q3 2007. Below, I refer to this as calendar Q4.
Their game division reports an operating profit of $113 million (operating income – operating expenses). Money spent on hardware isn’t booked as an expense until that hardware is sold.
Hardware Sales in Quarter
(in millions)
| Q4, 2007 | Q4, 2006 | |
|---|---|---|
| PS2 | 5.40 | 6.75 |
| PSP | 5.76 | 4.71 |
| PS3 | 4.90 | 1.66 |
Software Sales in Quarter
(in millions)
| Q4, 2007 | Q4, 2006 | |
|---|---|---|
| PS2 | 60.9 | 78.6 |
| PSP | 18.3 | 21.3 |
| PS3 | 26.0 | 5.3 |
It’s nice to see that Sony’s game division is turning a profit.
UPDATE:
Bad News: PS3 Sales targest for FY’07 (4/1/07 through 3/31/08) are lowered by 1.5 million from the original 11 million target to 9.5 million.
Good News #1: PSP sales targets are increased by 3 million from 10 million to 13 million.
Good News #2: PS3 outsold 360 for the overall fourth quarter of 2007! PS3 sold 4.9 milllion units worldwide, while 360 sold 4.3 million units. Way to go PS3!

My Gaming and Movie Rig

Recently I became the proud new owner of a KDS-60A3000 HDTV. It’s only a bit bigger than my previous HDTV, but the image quality and sharpness has taken a monumental leap forward. As well, with the new stand it looks quite svelte compared to my old setup. Here’s a pic:

Sorry about the picture quality, I should have taken the picture during the day.

Tekken 6 at Taipei Game Show [Update: Nancy]
Posted by Tosh in PS3, PS3 software, T, ZGame Profiles on January 29th, 2008
Good news is that the developers are working hard on porting the arcade version to the PS3. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection Online has given them some good data to work with. They believe it’s possible to have 60fps online battles. Me personally have really been enjoying Tekken 5 DR Online, works great. Sometimes you get a guy with a slow connection, but other than that, it’s great.

All the characters from previous Tekken games will make it into Tekken 6 due to requests of the fans. Guess nobody likes Gon or Doctor Boskonovitch from Tekken 3
But there was a girl that threatened to kill herself if her favorite character wasn’t included in the next game. So developers keep the character. Not sure which one it is. They have been so dedicated to Tekken 6 that 15 developers have lost their girl friends. I hope they find one after Tekken 6 is complete.
The producer also mention possible downloadable content like new characters and data download. On future, Harada hopes there is a chance to do some crossover with other fighting series, something along the line of “Tekken vs Virtua Fighter vs CAPCOM vs SNK”. Finally, Harada says while fans of respective series may see it as fierce rivalry, the developers behind these fighting games are actually very close together.
That could be very interesting. I’ve never been a Virtua Fighter fan though. I’ve been a fan of Tekken since I saw it in the arcades. I road my bike about 5 miles to the local arcade to just play Tekken 1 once, lol. Been hooked since

[Update]
Gary sent me this story. There is a bonus stage at the arcades in Japan with a huge robot called Nancy. Her life bar is much higher than normal, maybe even 10X! She doesn’t block anything you throw at it, but she can attack you will your attacking! Click the image below for a larger view.
GT5 Prologue Price and Date
Posted by Blackstaffer in G, PS3 software on January 29th, 2008
From the official PlayStation site:
It’s official – SCEA announced today the April 17 North American ship date for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, available exclusively for PS3. Developed by famed Polyphony Digital, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be available for $39.99 on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and as a download via the PLAYSTATION Store.
The BD version will offer added value with an exclusive behind-the-scenes High Definition (HD) video feature called “Beyond the Apex”. This video will offer some awesome access to the folks at Polyphony and give some background on how they are able to create such a realistic and beautiful driving simulator.
So there you go all you GT5 officianados. Less than three months to go. Though I have to say that I think $40 is a bit steep for what is really a glorified demo.
