I remember being disappointed a few years ago when I hooked the PS2 up to my new flat panel and then trying out GT4. Sure it was 1080i but it had a horrible moire effect, and lots of jagged edges. The game actually looked better at low res, as the display would smooth it out.

I fully completed GT3, however never bothered to finish GT4. At the moment the only racing game I’m playing a lot of is ridge racer for PS3. I do plan on getting GT5 prologue when it comes out.

I think by the time GT4 came out the interest that would have been there had kind of dissapeared. Part of it was due to the hefty delays of that game, basically 2 years. On top of shipping at a dead part of the year instead of making it in time for the previous holiday. So the extreme delays it received paired with the wierd release timing after the holidays and late in the system's life kind of make the shipments take a hit.

The game is a far more bankable product than Forza. Forza sells well, but Gran Turismo games tend to have legs, and sell pretty consistently at a slow burn. Gran Turismo 5 will have no problems selling well, the question is, will people be willing to pay 40 dollars for prologue when its basically "a GT5 appetizer"?

Richard, Forza 1 sold less than an eigth of Gran Turismo 4, which was the lowest selling in the GT series (excluding prologue and special editions) and less than a fourteenth of GT3. Forza 2 didn't sell much better. If Gran Turismo gamers are migrating to other games, it's definitely not Forza or GTR.

Combined Forza/GTR sales are a mere rounding error next to any entry from the GT series, and the GT series isn't selling nearly as well as it used to in the U.S. I'm not trying to dismiss the genre, I just suspect that the outrageous popularity of the GT series in the U.S. during the GT1-3 time frame may have been a fad among car enthusiast types who don't normally play video games.

Sales Data from vgchartz.com

Forza 1 Sales: 1.01 Million
Forza 2 Sales: 3.60 Million (this number is mostly bundle sales, when this game was included with all premium/elite 360 systems in Fall '07)

Gran Turismo 1: 10.85m
Gran Turismo 2: 9.37m
Gran Turismo Concept 2001 Tokyo: 1.56m
Gran Turismo 3: 14.87m
Gran Turismo 4 Prologue: 1.36m
Gran Turismo 4: 8.80 Million

car sims were a fad? GTR and forza didn't even exist until a few years ago, people just moved on form gran turismo because it didn't have the right features

Anecdotally, I knew several car nuts who would normally never touch a game, that were blown away by GT 1+2 on the PS1. Obviously, everything about those games was completely crude by today's standards. By the time GT3 had come out, their interest had waned, and by 2005, when GT4 and more competition came out, they had completely moved on.

I just think the car sims were somewhat of a fad in the 90's and early 00's.

What other racer, made in 2004/05 on PS2 had online racing?? I can't think of anyone that was worth the while, tbh^^

I preferred GT4 to 3, because it had much better tracks (Nordschleife is a beyotch though^^, having driven it in real life already too!) and nicer selection of cars.

I find it quite interesting, that the sales numbers in Europe are quite stable, yet the other numbers are VERY fluctuating. I could have played GT3 again, when GT4 came out, but ... it is GT man, there's nothing you may miss with this game at all!!

And yay, end of March, I will be playing GT5P before you yanks :P

GT5 will be the first true HD car sim, so it will sell great. Then it will suffer from the same thing that's happening to Madden. How do you improve on a great game. You can't make the cars shinier. They can only make incremental changes. That's why I think you'll see tons of DLC for this game engine. and you won't see a GT6 till the next platform. But you'll see tons of downloadable tracks and tournaments.
Does Rock Star need a new game engine or can they just keep the cash register ringing with new DLC songs every week?
Same with Madden NExt year they should just sell the updated rosters for the 08 NFL teams. They won't, but they should.
