all I want is to be able to read messages in-game. I don't even need to reply, necessarily.

Exactly.

As well, I often only want to talk to one friend while in the same game. That way, others don't hear our personal conversation. Plus I don't need to mute players.

It also helps for the case where a game doesn't support voice chat. That's becoming less common, though. But it sure would have been nice to have this feature when I was playing CoD3.

For me the point of cross game chatting isn't to have an open chat like 13yr olds keeping the phone line tied up while they watch tv. I think it's really the only practical way to organize a spontaneous game between your online friends.

I want to be able to have a conversation like this:

"Hey man, you feel like playing something?"

"uh sure, how about burnout?"

"Nah I've been playing that all morning. How about Army of Two?"

"Great. I'll setup the room."

Boom. 10 seconds have passed and you're already loading the disc. Civilized.

It seems extremly silly to chat while playing a different game than the person you are chating with. Whats the point?...I just want text messages, no photo sharing, no voice messages, and no more waiting.

Even tough in game messaging sounds really nice, it's not really practical imo. In game voice chat is something else. I would definitly use those features. It would be like answering a phone call while gaming :)

There are other features that would rock, like a chat lobby, but I think that such functionality is in the making with Home

I read this as in-game messaging in the summer, and firmware 2.4. The net is assuming that this will be in firmware 2.4 but somehow i don't think it will be, they could be two separate things. Not that you implied this Henning.

For now i would be happy for in-game messaging like Burnout Paradise and other games have implemented. So when i get notification i have a message i can at least read it, even if i am online or offline in a game. (Burnout for example wont let you read messages if you are online, only offline)

Voice chat would be really good, Xbox live you can leave a voice message like voicemail really and pick this up at any time, so something similar would be great, im not sure i could concentrate on a game whilst listening to a message so been able to do this whilst the game is paused or i am waiting for another round to start would be required.

Two friends of mine who have 360s are always talking to each other while playing different games. However, for me personally, it's not important.

Usually if I'm online, it's with Gary and the rest of the clan. I wouldn't want to be interrupted mid-game by someone else.

On the rare occasion I'm online 'alone', I still don't really want to be distracted by speaking to anyone while concentrating on a game.

But I still think it's an important feature for those who do want to make use of it.

I agree, it would be great if you could chat to your friends while they are playing other games.

Being able to send and read messages while in-game is very important but having the ability to chat to friends while you are playing different games would be pretty awesome.
