PS3 Gets Silently Upgraded to Firmware 2.17 [Update]
It’s available now. I have it installed, but I’m not sure what it does yet. But I’ll update this when we have more info. Maybe Sony is preparing for Home stuff? Or it could just be something else.
[Update] Thanks Børten
If you’ve signed in to the PLAYSTATION Network tonight on your PS3, you probably noticed that you were prompted to upgrade the system’s firmware to v2.17. In case you were wondering what it’s all about (and a quick Google search indicates that yes, you are) the operating stability of some online PS3 titles has been improved.

Hope that clears things up!

Yep, mainly a stabilizer for the online gaming experience.
One odd bit that escaped the official word was one other part of the Japanese changelog (via Google Translate)- “That can be installed to hard disk PlayStation 2 has been added to the standard software.”
Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Bit of groundwork for possible PS2 game downloads for the PS3?

Would love to store my PS1+PS2 games on my PS3!!! ;-P
Don’t think they can do that??? i.e you put in a PS1 or PS2 disc in & it will copy it to the PS3 Hard Drive. Erm you would need a very BIG Hard drive to! ;-D

I hope this update fixes the web browser problems that I and a lot of people I’ve spoken to have had since the last update!

That would be a awesome feature. If that’s really true down the line. I’ll need to invest in the external case mod for the PS3

It was a mistranslation. It supports PS2 games that utilize the hard drive like FFXI for example.

Turns out this fixes a hole that I.Load tool used to back up PS3 and PS1 games on the PAL 40 gig PS3 that was due to release in 10 days.
