PS3 Firmware 2.40 – July 2nd |

The Sony Europe Press Release:

Get more from online gaming on PLAYSTATION®3 with the free 2.40 firmware enhancement

PS3™ to give online gamers the features they’ve been requesting:
XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game and trophies available in this free, automatic system upgrade

June 30, 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced new online gaming functionality for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™), which will become available on July 2, 2008 with the 2.40 enhancement, an automatic firmware upgrade that delivers several of the features most requested by gamers. Combined with PLAYSTATION®Network’s unique service of free* online gaming, the enhancement makes PS3 an even more attractive platform of choice for the online gamer.

Firstly, the 2.40 enhancement allows XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller. With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can’t pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you’ve finished browsing. Along with these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends.

2.40 also delivers trophies to recognise players’ achievements in the online arena. Other competitive activities recognise winners with trophies – so why not gaming on PS3? Many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies – with platinum available for those who snag all three – all displayed on the XMB for everyone to see.

Super Stardust™ HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released last year, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies**. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

· BUZZ!™ Quiz TV
· LittleBigPlanet™
· MotorStorm™ Pacific Rift
· NBA 09 – PS3
· PAIN**
· PixelJunk™ Eden
· Resistance 2™
· SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
· Warhawk™**

The 2.40 enhancement is just one more reason to join PSN, the online network for PS3 users that lets you game online for free*. All you need to do to join is connect your PS3 to broadband and register, or go to the connection guide at to find out more.

Once in, you’ll find online matches and leagues for all of your favourite games – whether that’s MotorStorm™, Resistance™, Warhawk™ or Gran Turismo™5 Prologue – absolutely free (although users are responsible for paying their broadband fees) and at any time of the day or night. You’ll also find PLAYSTATION®Store, where you can download entire games as well as extra levels, content for your existing games plus internet browsing, video chat thanks to PLAYSTATION®Eye and much, much more.

There’s never been a better time to join PSN. Sign up now to make the most of the 2.40 firmware enhancement – see www.(website).com to find out more.

* No subscription required, broadband fees apply

** Requires a game update to be downloaded and installed

  • I’m surprised it’s being released so soon!

Very pleased to have customisable soundtracks but would’ve been great to have had cross game voice chat or have the option to begin a voice chat in the XMB with friends and continue the private voice chat between friends in-game.

It would solve a lot of problems that my clan mates and I have found in various online multi-players.

  • I’ve mentioned carrying a chat over to in-game in a comment on the blog post. Page 3, comment #137. It would solve so many problems.

…all in due time! these features will slowly start popping up

  • ehandlr

trophies not backdated :(. You got to play the game again to get the trophies.

  • Hmm, I hope I don’t have to get all the Rainbows again on PJM Encore to get a trophy! 👿

  • Well, it only makes sense. Otherwise you could get a savegame from someone else and POOF! magic trophies appear for you. It would make comparing trophies with others meaningless.

  • ehandlr

Aye I understand the whole trophy save file scenario…still hurts. lol I’ve purposely saved all of my files just for the day they would bring trophies lol

  • All in all this looks like a very nice update. But the thing I was looking forward to most – cross-game voice chat – is not there. 🙁 I guess they can’t please everyone all the time.

It might not have everything we ALL want or need, but its worth pointing out that this update is FREE, online gaming with the PS3 is FREE so we almost (i know not quite) have the same service as X-BOX Live but without the annual cost, so if we remember that, and the possibility that some of the stuff like cross game voice chat etc might be added later then i think this is the biggest announcement and most significant event since the launch of the PS3.

Trophies will be great and will add a little more competitiveness to playing games with me mates, all 100 of them now! 🙂

  • Very good update, there’s no shortage of us men needing more stuff, and here I go: I need to chat with my friend within any game I am, and not use the game’s own chat system (bypass it, as an option)

  • Trigga_Tybalt

trophies don’t backdate? so i have to 100% gta again? that’s ridiculous.

i’m about to do the boss emblem on mgs4 but i might as well wait?

  • Trieloth

What the hell? I have to pay for Broadband? Whats the world coming to? (JK)

  • I think the only games I’m likely to bother replaying are Uncharted and MGS4, though I’d play both again even without trophies.

In all my 28 years gaming, there have been precious few games I’ve had any inclination to go back and replay… which is why the 360’s achievements have never been a big attraction for me, and why I’m not particularly bothered about the new Trophy system either.

I like to complete games as far as the story goes, but I’m rarely interested in gathering collectibles. Uncharted is the only game in recent memory where I bothered to do so, and that was because it was just so much fun to play, and had a great story. I can’t be bothered getting 100% on GTA IV with or without trophies, and while I’ll play MGS4 through a few more times, I’m just not interested in finding everything there is to find.

To be honest, I’d rather developers didn’t bother with collectibles, and put the extra effort into making longer stories for games. I don’t want to spend another 8 hours looking for things in levels I’ve already completed… give me another 8 hours of actual gameplay!

  • 70% of released games are compatible with trophy system!

And apparently “it only takes developers half a days work to implement the trophy system into their games.” Sounds good.

  • Staregry

I love old games. Prince of Persia – wonderfuuuuuul classic game.
