The New “Humble” Sony
Posted by Darrin in Uncategorized on February 5th, 2009
In 2006-2007, the Internet hive mind interpreted anything Sony did or said as arrogant. More recently, even the most routine and cookie-cutter reports on sales and financial performance is characterized as some kind of evil and out-of-touch “spin”. Now, Sony execs have finally got the hive mind press to fawn over it’s new humble image:
A few things:
- David Reeves isn’t humble. I don’t care if he gives a sniveling interview about how Sony has to take their licks. He’s from RJR Nabisco, which has a reputation for the most extreme forms of corporate greed and excess. OK, he’s not evil or anything, but I don’t buy it.
- Jack Tretton isn’t humble either. I don’t care if he pretends to be nervous at his E3 presentation and asks the audience if his fly is unzipped. These guys are jaded, heavy-weight execs from the upper-echelons of international corporate culture.
- Big publically traded international businesses aren’t humble, arrogant, happy, or sad. They are inanimate unfeeling organizational entities. Their primary purpose is to make shareholders money. As peripheral benefits to society, they provide products to consumers that compete for their dollars and careers to their staff that compete for their talents.
- The gaming hive mind as a whole is weak-minded, malleable, and easily impressionable. Companies spend so much resources on managing (manipulating) public opinion for a reason.
- Fans and consumers should care about the actual end products and not some perceived personality that they’ve attached to the the corporate entities involved.
Killzone 2 Demo Impressions
Posted by Blackstaffer in Killzone 2 on February 5th, 2009
Okay, I just played through the Killzone 2 demo. It’s a very short experience. I died 5 times and had to redo parts, and it still took me less than 15 minutes. But it gave me a good impression of the game, and that’s what a demo is all about, eh?
First off, the menus are ANNOYING. Do they want me to have a headache before ever entering the game? The whole screen jerks around for every action you do in the menu. Why? Why oh why? “Let’s give everyone a bad impression of the game right from the start!”
The graphics were nice. They didn’t blow my mind, maybe because I’ve seen too many videos of the game. But they were nice. Sometimes there was some stuttering, which was a bit annoying. [Edit: Yes, yes, yes. The graphics are very nice. I am just so used to them by now, having seen a TON of videos, that they were nothing new and therefore didn't impress me as much as if I'd been seeing them for the first time.]
This paragraph describes what the demo consists of. If you don’t want to know, skip to the next paragraph. Right now! Go! The demo starts off like the famous video, with you flying through the air on a motorized air car, or whatever it’s called. You land and have to shoot some baddies. There is no tuturial to speak of. This level is the tutorial, I guess. Anyway, after you land you can shoot some baddies on a bridge if you want to, but you’re really supposed to get the RPG and blow up the fuel dump on the bridge, which effectively destroys it. Then you wander under the bridge, turn a corner or two, have some more friends join you, and have a big fire fight with a bunch of Helghast. Once that’s done, you move into the building where you fight inside a warehouse area. You’ve probably seen it before in videos. And that’s it. When you exit that room, the demo ends. Then you get to see the death dance video with some text saying how great the game is.
The controls take some getting used to. Crouch is not a toggle, while ADS is. This is backwards in my opinion, though you can make ADS non-toggle in the options. Not so for crouch. Grrrr. Next time I play through the demo I’ll also have to tweak the turning speed, because the default made me feel like I was turning under water. I never have to play with these settings in other games. But I will here. All in all I have to say I was disappointed with the controls. I might still get used to them, but why don’t they have a control scheme that mimics the CoD one? It’s the best there is. At least give us the option. The last Alternate control scheme is the one that most closely mimics CoD, but the “most closely” ruins it. Having to play with both L1 for ADS and L2 for a non-toggle crouch was annoying. I’ll have to play experiment with difference schemes.
All in all? I would love to say that the demo was an impressive tour de force which blew my mind. But… well… it didn’t. Like most shooters I think I’m going to go straight to the multiplayer and skip the campaign. (Unless they release a co-op patch.)
[Edit: Regular readers of this site know that I place a huge emphasis on playing games with other people. Either multiplayer or co-op. So a single player experience doesn't have much hold on me in ANY game. I am VERY much looking forward to the multiplayer.]

Games Night #5 Redux
Posted by Blackstaffer in Game Night on February 5th, 2009
Games Night #5, which was last night, was a great success!
Some of us met up in Home first. There was xBerserker (Tosh), Trieloth, HEAD_SHOTT, Sinlock, and me (Blackstaffer). We chatted it up first and it was nice that we all had headsets. We didn’t need to type.
We even remembered to use R2 to talk!
At 10pm sharp I exited Home and went into CoD:WaW. At first I went into the online co-op area, but discovered that I couldn’t invite people to my party if they were in the online multiplayer area. So I went over there (why is menu navigation SO SLOW?). Eventually I got a party of four together – Trieloth, HEAD_SHOTT, cpfuzz2, and me. We waited around for HEALLACHEAP to join us, but he was taking too long, so we played a game of Headquarters while we waited (sorry dude). (Of course as soon as we were in the game for a minute or two he came online.) We did a pretty good job winning that game – I think the final score was something like 250 to 20.
After that, HELLACHEAP and warpdrive joined us, so we were six people playing. That was more than we’ve ever gotten together on games night, so I was quite pleased.
We played some Domination, some Search and Destroy, and some Capture the Flag. Some games went well, and some games went really really bad. We stopped the evening on a sour note – losing 6-0 at capture the flag.
We spent all our time trying to avoid the stupid enemy tanks, it wasn’t much fun. But I had a good time playing the other matches, even the ones we lost.
Another great thing about the evening was that all of us (except for cpfuzz2) had headsets. So we could talk to one another and complain when “I shot that guy 5 times and he didn’t die!” (who was that, anyway?). Maybe we should have used our headsets to coordinate a bit more.
cpfuzz2 – you have to get a headset! Even though it was nice to have headsets, it’ll take some getting used to. I don’t recognize anybody’s voice except for Ray’s low gravelly one. Somebody mentioned that they played S&D in Hardcore a lot, but I couldn’t tell you right now who it was.
So yeah we played Search and Destroy on hardcore mode, which was quite confusing when I tried to plant a bomb. It never said “Hold Square to plant explosive” so I couldn’t plant. I didn’t realize until someone helped me later to diffuse it (which one of you was that?) that it doesn’t prompt you – you just have to be in the right spot and hold down Square. (Can you tell I don’t play Hardcore mode at all?)
One thing I noticed that I thought was cool was that CoD5 shows your party members in blue. This is both in the lobby and in the game, where your chevrons are blue. Nice touch.
Also, it was obvious that there was a large variance in gamers’ abilities, to say the least. warpdrive and I both finished at the bottom of the pack in most games with very few kills, while all the others did much better. Hey, I never said I was good at this stuff. I just like it! I hope you better players didn’t mind that us poor players brought you down!
So I’m happy. If game nights continue like this one, I’ll stay happy. Once Killzone 2 comes out, it’ll be nice to know that everyone with a PS3 will have the game and we won’t need to wonder which game to play. (Make sure you have a headset!) But in the lead-up to that awesome (I hope) event, we can keep playing other fun games. Next week I think we’ll go with Warhawk or CoD4. I’ll post about that in the next couple days. In the meantime, think about which you’d rather play.

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel has Great Co-op
Posted by Blackstaffer in Sacred 2: Fallen Angel on February 4th, 2009

There has been exactly one top-down fantasy action RPG for the PS3: Untold Legends. While it was fun to play (especially the combat), it had its quirks. Now it looks like I’m finally going to have another such game to play on the PS3, and won’t have to stick Champions of Norrath into my PS3 for my RPG fix. The game is called Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, and its coming to the PS3 and 360 pretty soon.
The cool thing about this game is that it has true drop-in/out co-op. Here’s part of the interview:
Co-Optimus: What co-op options do console players have? Will players be able to pair up on one console with other players on Xbox Live/PSN?
Mario: Yes. You will be able to play with up to four players total with up to two per console. Players can join the game by plugging in an additional controller or by joining online games via Xbox Live or PSN.
Neat, huh? I have a couple friends buying PS3′s soon, so I can’t wait to get online with them for some RPG action.
Red Dead Redemption Announced
Posted by Darrin in Uncategorized on February 4th, 2009
Rockstar Games announces Red Dead Redemption for PS3/360. This is a sequel to the PS2/Xbox game Red Dead Revolver.

This is being developed by Rockstar San Diego, the same studio that developed the first title, as well as the Midnight Club series.
For those that didn’t play the first title, it was a light-hearted, fun, simple, charming, and kind of corny wild west action game. I beat it on a quick rental. It’s wasn’t a very deep game, but it was a very entertaining and easy to appreciate title. It’s definitely good enough that I’m looking forward to seeing the PS3 sequel.

This is goint to have a fully explorable open world type system and is using Rockstar’s RAGE graphics engine that was used in GTA 4 and Midnight Club LA.
