Second downloadable Killzone®2 Map Pack announced
Fight your way down memory lane with the Flash and Thunder Pack: two original Killzone® maps remade for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™)
London, 20th May 2009: The next wave of downloadable content for Killzone®2 on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) has now been announced. Prepare for a literal blast-from-the-past in the form of the Flash and Thunder Pack: a download from PlayStation®Store featuring the Beach Head and Southern Hills maps. They’re two of the best maps from the original Killzone® for PlayStation®2 – now completely remade for PS3, overflowing with brutal combat between the ISA and the merciless Helghast and offering gamers even more ways to play the first-person shooter that everyone’s talking about.
The Beach Head map sees the ISA tasked with defending a coastal stronghold against a Helghast landing force. This rain-lashed and windswept battlefield is limited in size – which means more action, more hand-to-hand combat, plenty of sneaking up on the enemy and melee kills galore. The Southern Hills map sees the ISA attempting to storm a Helghast compound on top of a hill. A mixture of built-up terrain and wide open spaces – perfect for headshot sniper kills – this map is full of hiding places and offers the perfect battlefield for a large-scale game with lots of players.
The Flash and Thunder Pack is the second awesome instalment of downloadable extra content for Killzone 2 on PS3 and will arrive in PlayStation®Store on (11th of June 2009).

Why PS3 Exclusives Don’t Sell: An Anecdote
When several kids (about 10) were over my house playing with my daughter, some were playing my PS3. Yet they would only play Call of Duty over and over. I asked what their favorites were and they said Halo, Gears of War, and Call of Duty. Since they apparently liked shooters, I asked what they thought of Killzone 2. They said they hadn’t tried it and were obviously completely uninterested in doing so.
Their reaction reminded me of when I was a kid and the Transformers franchise was the hot fad. I remember seeing some Chinese immitation Transformer-like toys that were much cheaper than the official Transformer toys, yet kids were repulsed by them. Kids wanted to play with the officially branded Transformers toys that their peers were playing with and not some generic knock offs.
Today, the PlayStation brand is that generic knock off for many of today’s kids. Xbox and Wii are the hot peer-approved fads, and while much of the best and most innovative content is on the PlayStation platform, it is stuck behind a brand that is actively disliked.
EDIT: OK, Killzone 2 sold over a million worldwide. Those are actually fairly good sales and certainly not a disaster. However overall, Sony seems to be putting out very high quality innovative games that sell much lower than comparable competition.
Early Team ICO Game Test Footage
This is leaked year-old internal video footage from the new Team ICO game, Project Trico. This isn’t a trailer designed for public release. However, it’s an interesting peak at a hotly anticipated game that’s been kept under wraps for quite a long time.
We should see an official unveiling of this game at TGS ’09 in September or very possibly E3.
E3 Floor Plans Revealed

It looks like that time is drawing closer. Sony this year has the largest booth and its HUGE! Not only that…they have another booth for SOE thats also very very large so lets hope that means MMO’s for PS3! In fact…I’d say that Sony’s both plus SOE’s booth is larger then Nintendo’s and MS’s put together. Lets hope that means a good show.

King of Fighters XII & BlazBlue
Posted by Darrin in BlazBlue, King of Fighters XII on May 18th, 2009
Fans of 2D fighters are about to get their fill from two big production titles that have been in a long development cycle and are finally set to ship this summer:
- King Of Fighters XII This is the first current-gen console fighter from SNK. The developers are aiming to make this the ultimate 2D fighting game. As opposed to more common place cel shading technology, KoF XII is using completely 100% hand-drawn artwork and animation.
- BlazBlue This is the spiritual successor to the Guilty Gear series. While they have shipped several Guilty Gear up-port releases, this is their first game that is fully designed from the ground up for current-gen HD systems.
Both of these games take the competitive one-on-one fighting genre very seriously and these should be very well crafted titles.
Custom KoF Fighting Sticks
There are two new sticks for KoF XII. They are PS3 exclusive and Japan only however they are regular USB and should be import-friendly. One is a six-button layout stick with custom KoF artwork and other is a four-button SNK black stick with no flashy artwork. KoF is designed for the four-button layout.

Fuel

Fuel is scheduled to ship next week. This is an off-road racing game set in a post-apocalyptic world with a focus on different vehicle classes such as bikes, ATVs, buggies, and big trucks.
I hate to compare this to another game, but the concept and all the preview footage look quite a bit like Motorstorm. I loved Motorstorm (Pacific Rift is much better than the original btw), and I’m excited to see another quality off-road racing title.
Features
- Offroad racing featuring different vehicle classes (bikes, ATVs, buggies, SUVs, monster trucks)
- Outlandish fantasy weather effects including tornadoes, sandstorms, and lightning storms. The particle effects look great.
- Open World Exploration. For racing games, I prefer fixed pre-configured tracks with condensed action and scenery over giant open world exploration. I hope they can do this well.
The fantasy weather effects look decadent, the racing environments look diverse and fun, I’m a little skeptical about the open world exploration elements, but I’m hoping that they can pull this off and make another great racing title.
