When will Sony ship a slim redesigned PS3?

Sony officially said, “We currently don’t have any plans for a redesigned PS3.” This isn’t completely accurate. I’m sure that the teams involved with manufacturing the hardware definitely have continuous plans for improving the hardware, lowering production costs, and using newer and improved components from their suppliers. And I’m sure a major end-user visible smaller, lighter redesign is well planned. What Sony’s PR statement translates to is that they don’t have any plans that they are ready to discuss publically or any near-finished product that is going to ship in the immediate future.

First, a brief overview of hardware improvements (source):

Original Launch Hardware (November 2006) Newer PS3 Hardware (as of August 2008)
Cell CPU 90nm tech 65nm tech (smaller, cheaper, cooler, lower power draw)
RSX GPU 90nm tech 65nm tech (same improvements as above)
Max Power Draw 200 Watt 130 Watt
Cooling 5 internal heat pipes Cheaper, lighter heat aluminum heat sinks

In addition to the above, in 2008 Toshiba and Sony announced that they had Cell CPUs being manufactured with an even cheaper, cooler, and lower power 45nm and that would be in full mass production sometime in 2009. They didn’t mention a specific date, but new PS3 assembly will obviously switch to that once it’s available.

Secondly, have you seen a disassembled PS3? The blu-ray drives are big and heavy. Various vendors have been selling much lighter, thinner 9.5mm blu-ray drives for over a year now. I’m sure that technology is readily and cheaply available for PS3 use when they do decide to do a redesign.

Thirdly, they’ve dropped PS2 compatability hardware which I strongly dislike as an end user, but I’m sure that simplifies the hardware.

Bottom Line

There have major improvements to every part of the PS3 hardware since it first launched in 2006, yet they are still using the exact some external shell with the same size and form factor. The technology is available to do a major slimline redesign, the question is when will they do that?

I really can’t guess better than anyone else, but I think it’s a safe bet that we will see further internal improvements to new PS3 units later this year. At the least, we will likely see 45nm process technology in production this year.

PS3 Version of Final Fantasy XIII will have 2 audio tracks, 360 only 1

Blu-ray will have room for both the Japanese voice track and the English one. Wonder if you select Japanese audio if you have the option for subtitles. If so that’s how I would play the game.

In a recent Q&A with IGN, FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that without the kind of memory available on Blu-ray, there’s simply not enough room on the 360 to implement two vocal tracks. He added, “Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?” Well, gang? Are there?

Not that this will matter to most people, but nice to have the option. Would you use the Japanese audio if given the choice?

Xbox 360 version of FFXIII may be monolingual

Red Dead Redemption Details

The big surprise to me, is that I have been expecting a game like Red Dead Revolver which was cute and fun, but instead this is going to be a GTA transplant game like Bully.

If you aren’t familiar with Bully, they basically took the whole GTA game structure including the technology, the mission structure, exploration and side missions, and transplanted it from GTA’s urban crime setting to a schoolyard setting. For fans of GTA writing or gameplay, it was a great game.

With Red Dead Redemption they are taking GTA4 and transplanting it to a western setting, and adding a variety of improvements. BTW, the earlier title, Red Dead Revolver, was mostly developed outside of Rockstar who bought it late in development to complete and ship it.

IGN has a really in depth interview with Rockstar VP Dan Houser. To summarize some of the highlights:

  • Roughly the same massive quantity of dialog as GTA4.
  • Customized character AI to fit western setting.
  • Compared with GTA4, this title will feature iterative improvements to various gameplay elements, narrative, technology, and multiplayer modes.
  • They are aiming for a balance between historical accuracy and entertainment. One example Mr Houser cited were switching from polite bloodless deaths portrayed in most western movies to more unpleasant and realistic violence.

This sounds excellent. I was sorry to have missed the GTA4 expansion (currently 360 exclusive but hopefully that’s a timed exclusive that will soon expire), but this looks much bigger and better. This is easily at the top of my most anticipated 2009 games.

Critter Crunch! Rainbow barf has never been so cute

It’s a different take on a puzzle game. You feed critters into each other until they burst. Looks fun actually, check out the video. It is coming to the PlayStation Network this summer and will cost under $10.

Critter Crunch is fueled by an original and award-winning “food chain” puzzle mechanic, which is all about feeding critters into each other until they burst. It’s exactly as cute as it is horrible and sad, just like nature itself!

The game features a bunch of single player modes like adventure & puzzle, as well as online and local multiplayer in versus & co-op flavors, with a plethora of fancy trophies to collect. It also has lots of really pretty 1080p art that should make your HDTV happy.

English FF7 Advent Children Complete Trailer and release date

Here is the English version and man the voices are horrible. I’m so glad the Japanese audio with English subs are going to be on it.

The release date is June 2nd, 2009. If you pre-order from Amazon it’s $22.99 instead of $38.96. It says it comes with sneak peak at FF13, but not sure if that’s the demo that Japan got or not. Regardless I’m getting this, it will look amazing on Blu-ray! I’ve refused to watch it again until I get the Blu-ray.

It’s been a long wait but it’s almost here, it’s worth it alone for the extra footage and the high definition goodness.

Sacred 2 is Shipping

sacred2_bikini.png

I’ve recently found out that Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is finally shipping, after at least a couple delays.

I’ve really been looking forward to playing another game of this type since finishing Untold Legends so long ago.

I’ll be reviewing a copy soon, so stay tuned.

Killzone 2 DLC Poll Results

What kind of DLC do you want the most for KZ2?

New maps.: 40% (85)
New gameplay types (king of the hill, etc).: 23% (49)
Gameplay tweaks.: 23% (48)
Other?: 14% (30)

I myself would like to see more gameplay types. I think it extends the life of a online game more than maps.
