Sacred 2: It’s a Love Hate Thing

Last night I was really annoyed at Sacred 2. I was trying to play with a friend. These are my experiences:

GRRRRR!
ARgh!
No!
Hello? Steve? You there?
How about now?
Now?
Crap!!!
Stupid little…
AAAAAAAAARGH!

First, when I got into the game, it kicked me out again right away. Host closed session, or something like that. But my friend hadn’t closed the game, so that was annoying. This happened again later.

Later, I got magically signed out of PSN and therefore got kicked from the game. This never happens to me. This sounds like a PSN thing, not a Sacred 2 thing, but with all the problems I’ve been having with Sacred 2, I’m putting my money there.

Several times, voice chat didn’t work. Voice chat, when it does work, works great. Much better than MotorStorm 2, which we were playing the other day right before a session of Sacred 2. But last night, it flaked out on me. At one point turning off my headset and turning it on again worked. Later, not even that worked. I lost voice totally and couldn’t get it working. Yes, my headset was charged.

And last but not least, I tried initiating a trade with my friend, and it got stuck there. We couldn’t exit the menu, we couldn’t complete the trade, it just got stuck. I had to quit the game in order to stop, losing some yummy items I had acquired in the process. (Thankfully not TOO many, because I had begun saving more often.)

I love this game. It’s great fun. So far it’s been a mostly smooth experience. But last night was a huge exercise in frustration. After we quit the game I watched an old episode of Daybreak to make myself feel better. Why that series was ever canned is beyond me. What a great show that was. I have all thirteen episodes and am going through them again.

Join the PS3Blog.net Community

I have created a community portal for the members of this site. You can use the same log in as this site too. Plus it’s AJAX so no need to refresh the page. Anyone can view it, but only members of PS3Blog.net can participate.

Basics rules:

1. Don’t start a post or comment with a URL
2. Use tags when possible. If you want to use more than 1 tag just separate it with commas.
3. Have fun

Think of it like a Twitter just for us, or a forum in a way. Hard to explain, head over to PS3Blog.net/community to try it out. We could use it to plan game nights, if you want to move the chat from the Live Shoutbox over to the community side you could. Just a FYI only the last 35 comments show in the Shoutbox. Post PS3, PSP, HDTV related stories there if you want. Just some thoughts, you can use it however you wish within reason.

I put the latest posts and comments from the community in the right sidebar of this site.

Xi Impressions

xi-alternate-reality-playstation-home-pic

Pros

  • Weekly Episodic Delivery: They released new Xi rooms, zones, and levels every single week which made it feel fresh and alive.
  • Playing alongside strangers: This worked particularly well when combined with the weekly new content.
  • Immersion: Xi isn’t launched from Home, it’s in Home. Playing as my own Home avatar in the Home universe felt much more immersive than running a separate app.
  • Clever mini-games: Highlights were the ghost maze and the two miniature text adventures.
  • More than a sum of its parts: The whole experience was very unique and fresh as a whole yet most of the individual puzzles and mini-games were fairly generic. Most of those mini-games couldn’t compete on a standard Flash web game portal, yet in the context of Xi and Home, they were lots of fun.

Cons

  • Glitchy: This game had dozens of glitches and had lots of technical rough edges. This was more than a minor annoyance and I periodically had to search the net to resolve the issue.
  • Difficulty: Most of the Butterfly puzzles were completely impossible without using a walkthrough guide. I bet no more than 1% of the player base did those things without a walkthrough.
  • Plot and Dialog: I think this was written for the Twilight-crowd. I couldn’t stand it. The Jess character, the idiotic plot, the bad alternative music… SEMI-SPOILER: Destroy Xi if you make it to the end.
  • Uninspired mini-games: Some of the mini-games were great, while others were very bland.

Wish list

A full-blown Myst style adventure game within Home and integrated into various existing spaces. Also, I’m sure whatever nDreams does next will be worth checking out.

Sony’s response to Activision.

FleaKitten wrote earlier, Activision threatened they would quit supporting the Playstation platform and Sony’ spokesman Patrick Seybold has responded to the claims;

“PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners. We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”

There’s no doubt Sony has an impressive gaming lineup coming out but losing some Activision title would have a big impact. To be honest I think this threat has as much substance as the FOTA threat to quit F1 and that means no so much..

G4TV: God of War III Demo Full Preview

This is the same demo that was shown at E3, but this is the whole demo. They cut it short at E3. So you can just skip to the 6:00 minute mark.

Be forewarned it’s extremely gory, so it’s not for the weak at heart. A guys heads gets ripped off in extreme detail. Man this mans looks epic! Must have it.
