PS3 Locked Game Saves [Compilation List]

Locked Game Saves on the PS3

[tab:Post]
I’ve been wanting to do this post for a long time. It’s something that has always bugged me. There are certain game saves that are locked to the console itself. Now this isn’t an issue as long as your PS3 doesn’t break. But what if you want to “upgrade” to the PS3 Slim? Or if your PS3 breaks down, and you get a different PS3 back from Sony?

Even if you do a full back-up to a external hard drive. It won’t restore the locked save data to a different PS3. But if you restore it to the same PS3 you did the back-up on, your fine. For example if you upgrade your hard drive.

Most of the PS3 games are NOT locked, so this may not even be an issue for some.

I can understand locking save data. But don’t lock it to a specific PS3. Lock it to a PSN ID instead. That way if you move to a different system you won’t lose all the hard work you’ve done. You could lock copyright-protected movies and music to a PSN ID as well.

LittleBigPlanet is kinda unique, see below. Thanks go to Andrew for this.

I believe the game save data is now locked, but all game progress and created levels are now actually stored as game data rather than as a game save.

From in game you can export your profile, which generates a file in the save data folder, which can be copied around, and imported on another system. This file appears to contain everything you would have expected to be in the save file (character customization, single player progress & created levels).

You need to export your profile each time before you are able to save it to an external device.

Profile Locking

  • Red Faction Guerrila – copy locks your personal profile and settings, but not your game saves.
  • Mass Effect 2 Profile (Game progress/Settings) is locked. Actual game save file for ME2 is not locked.

Games saves patched to remove copy protection:

Batman: Arkham Asylum (Said to not have copy protection)
Gran Turismo 5
MotorStorm: Pacfic Rift
Resident Evil 5
Resistance 2 (Been told it isn’t copy protected)
Valkyria Chronicles [System Data (settings) file is locked, but the Play Data file is not]

Let me know if you find any more and I’ll add it to the list.

Storage of Game Saves OnlineCloud Saving has arrived!

[tab:What can be transferred]

Here is what data can be transferred to a new PS3:

  • Saved data from PLAYSTATION®3 format software *1
  • Image files under (Photo)
  • Music files under (Music) *2
  • Video files under (Video) *2
  • Bookmarks added under (Internet Browser)
  • Terms that were added using (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Add/Edit Term], or predictive terms that were “learned” by the on-screen keyboard

*1 Copy-protected data cannot be restored. Also, saved data that has been restored may not be usable in some games.
*2 Does not include copyright-protected data.

# In some cases, you may not be able to use the Backup Utility feature to back up or restore the system correctly. It is recommended that you always copy or move important data to storage media in order to independently back up your data.

*** If you are replacing your PS3 for another one. Don’t forget to DEACTIVATE your Games and Videos on that PS3! Here is a walk though on how to do it.

yeah, locking to the PSN ID would be better, but it would be best if none were locked. Another game to add to the list would be Fight Night Round 4. My bro and I were creating boxers and couldn’t share the save between the IDs. I’ll keep my eyes on the lookout for any others though, check my old saves and see what else I can find

  2. #2 by Tony on August 26th, 2009

This, I felt, was always a problem as well. I back up my save data to an SD card, and entire hard drive occasionally, in fear failure. My PS3′s power supply did go out and received a new one. My Rock Band 2 data was not recoverable. All I had left were the Endless Set lists too. :(

  3. #3 by GamesOgre.net on August 26th, 2009

Every modern system seems to do this for select games. I too would prefer portability. Why is it that certain developers put their saves on lock-down? Is it because of multi-player online gaming? Is it because they think achievements are important?

  4. #4 by Paranoimia on August 26th, 2009

Agreed, it should be locked to the ID and not the console.

I’m thinking of getting a Slim, basically to get stuff moved before my launch 60GB has a chance to fail, and this would be a problem for me – though maybe not as much now, thanks to this post. My two main concerns were Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5.

I haven’t yet finished RE5 (yeah, I know… get a move on…) and am pleased to hear that it has been patched to unlock the saves.

Killzone 2 would be my only problem title. However, I have at least completed the story mode on that, and so it may not be that big an issue as I’d be restarting from the beginning anyway.

I remember Burnout locking to ID, dunno for sure tho..

I think it is, I’ll check it out.

look on the bright side, it’s not the whole catalog at least

  8. #8 by PS3 Slim Deals UK on August 27th, 2009

To be honest locking the game saves from deletion may be actually handy, however when I think about it more it might be a bad idea.

  9. #9 by Kicks on August 27th, 2009 [ 774 Points ]

I really hope they make saves in the future locked to id’s and not consoles. I hate taking my ps3 over to a friends house just so that I can work on rock band 2 progress.

With the 360 and their memory cards, I could simply save to the memory unit and take that with me. Why not allow us to lock our saves to memory stick pro duo’s or some other form of usb storage instead of requiring everything to be saved on the hard drive?

  10. #10 by hobbes on August 27th, 2009 [ 28876 Points ]

would be nice if they fixed this, rock band unlocks is annoying when i had to get a new ps3.

  11. #11 by Tosh on August 27th, 2009 [ 1102 Points ]

Not every new game locks there saves.

  12. #12 by JimmyMagnum on August 27th, 2009 [ 83111 Points ]

even when you transfer saves, the trophies remain with the original account (I believe). The only thing I see is a half completed game being transferred to another account and only being able to unlock trophies that have not yet been completed. The others would most likely require a second playthrough on the account that didnt get said trophies. But back in the day, that wasn’t an issue because there werent trophies in the first place.

  13. #13 by GamesOgre on August 27th, 2009 [ 115 Points ]

All in all, no worries. I’m happy with my 60gb PS3. Once I beat a game, I rarely pick it up again. How many of us have all of our old Dreamcast, PS2, original Xbox, etc., game saves anyway? Since the failure rate on the PS3 is pretty low, I’ve got no reason to get bent out of shape over this. The system is great and works like a champ. Plus I’d prefer not to pay a monthly online fee to Microsoft and risk not being able to transfer my saves.

  14. #14 by stvw74 on September 27th, 2009

i sank more than 50hrs into Skate2 before my PS3 YLoD’d .. got it back, bought a Slim, switched over after full data backup & then restore .. sweet .. do it all again! .. link to iD pls Sony

  15. #15 by Keith K on October 8th, 2009

I’ve run full backups on several PS3s for HDD changes. I also run full backups once a month.

The reason: Full Backups DO save all save files, even locked ones.

    Do a little research.

  16. #16 by bertran611 on October 8th, 2009

Ninja Gaiden Sigma, unfortunately, although i’d hardly call it punishment to have to play through the game from scratch after been locked out of a save

  17. #17 by Eight Ball on October 8th, 2009

R6V2 is particularly stupid, it stores your rank and stats offline in your save file; add on top of that the fact that it’s a locked save and you get completely mullered if you swap PS3.

While I prefer my 80GB model I’m gonna swap to a slim soon cause if I ever have to change I’d rather do it now, pop in a 500GB HDD and keep any future saves that do this.

  18. #18 by Jax on October 8th, 2009

Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires has locked save files too; not that anyone probably really cares but me

  19. #19 by hobbes on October 8th, 2009

Keith K, read the post, it’s fine for HD replacements, the problem with locked saves is when you move from 1 ps3 to a new one.

  20. #20 by hobbes on October 8th, 2009

i just don’t understand sony’s logic with these locked saves

  21. #21 by orakga on October 8th, 2009

Please add DEMONS SOULS to the list as well.

yea i had that problem with burnout paradise and devil may cry 4.
got burnout paradise finished it 100% than my bluray drive desides to kick the bucket, so i do a full backup and send it for repairs.
once i got it back i could not use my save data so i started all over again for BP and DMC4.
than i got a YLOD like 2 weeks after i got it back, and had to start both games ALL OVER AGAIN!
than i had to start burnout paradise again for the trophies.
god knows how many hours i have sunk into those games, just redoing what i have already done.

1 feature that i really really really wished sony would implement into the PS3 is this.
    anytime/anywhere saves.
    like what PC games have.
like STALKER i remember this tunnel bit every time i went through i kept dying so i hit auto save, than ran in and died.
reloaded the auto save and boom back to where i saved it.
you have no idea, how handy that would be.

It sounds like many people are worried about losing their Trophies (aka Accomplishments, Gamer Scores, etc.) I can understand worrying about unlockables as that adds a new dimension to game play by adding new features. But am I missing something? Do Trophies actually do anything for us besides get us a cookie from our mommy who is very proud of her little gamer?

  28. #28 by Tosh on October 10th, 2009 [ 1102 Points ]

    Updated the list again.

  29. #29 by manthra on October 22nd, 2009

Please add Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to the list :(
I have 10 games and 5 of them have copy protected save files. I wish I would have know about this before I started making purchases. I will NOT support any developer that adds this horrid feature to their games.

  30. #30 by manthra on October 22nd, 2009

I’m glad Capcom patched RE5 and removed the copy protection. Hopefully they will do the same with ALL of their games.

  31. #31 by Tosh on October 22nd, 2009 [ 1102 Points ]

Added Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to the list, thanks for the heads up manthra.

  32. #32 by zeroXII on October 26th, 2009

Something to note, my Batman AA and DMC4 save data was restored to the slim. Have not tested whether the data works though, but in theory it should.

I’m still pissed about losing my RB2 and GH5 data though. All that time and effort just wasted… plus all band registry and shit….

  33. #33 by hobbes on October 27th, 2009 [ 28876 Points ]

tosh, anyway we can get the game companies that do this? and some how get a petition going ? to said companies? I can’t imagine having to restart demon’s souls. I would have to believe they could code these save files to prevent hackers. It’s never good when game companies do this.( maybe around some of these from what i read) If you’re able to copy the game to a usb drive, i believe what you need to do is to start the game up on the 2 different systems freshly, and then when you copy to the usb device copy over the old save, i read somwwhere that that works, but other games simply won’t let you copy the game at all.

  34. #34 by manthra on October 30th, 2009

I read that Batman: Arkham Asylum isn’t copy protected. Can anyone confirm this for certain? I’d love to buy this game if its true :)

  35. #35 by manthra on October 31st, 2009

Hey hobbes, a petition of some sort sounds like a great idea. I couldn’t imagine loosing Street Fighter IV data. Having to unlock everything from scratch would be a nightmare,

  36. #36 by manthra on November 8th, 2009

Dragon Age Origins has been confirmed to have a locked save file.

  37. #37 by manthra on November 8th, 2009

Hi I think I’ve finally found the answer lol, are you saying that you can lock copy locked saves onto a PSN Network account? Could you explain how to do that, thanks so much, because I was really annoyed how dragon age is locked and it is a huge game and yet I cant play it on other Ps3 consoles :(
    Reply asap thanx

JC_565_JC: are you saying that you can lock copy locked saves onto a PSN Network account? Could you explain how to do that

Sadly no, you can’t lock game saves to a PSN ID. I wish that was the case though ..

  48. #48 by Mark, PISSED OFF! on January 27th, 2010

These locked games are a freaking joke! At what point does the consumer actually own a copy of a game, by definition? I worked in the auto industry and have seen the same crap, with the big guys losing this battle.
Car companies wanted to put codes in cars so only dealers could fix them, these codes were not available to your local independent mechanic. Thus your local mechanic was slowly becoming subject to being put out of business, and we all pay more down the road for dealer repair. Sound familiar Sony?
The US supreme court, decided that the codes of a cars workings, are that of the owner, and can not be held back from them. Nor could restrictions and or conditions be placed, for this information obtainable to your local repair shop.
The saved date in question is personal data, not created by any other means.

*I purchased my copy of the game. As approved by Sony Corp. It was not subsidized or provided to me in any other means.

*I purchased my PS3 gaming console. It was not subsidized or provided to me by any other means.

*I generated the saved game data. With no help, or compensation from Sony Corp.

*I (my PS3) help support your online network with MY hardware. I receive no compensation from Sony Corp.

Are you smelling the class acting law suit here Sony Corp. ? You are also invading my privacy, in as how and were and what I spend my time doing is MY OWN! Saved files are my journal.

I would love to see Sony try this crap with there laptops and home computers. Imagine not being able to copy or transfer a file, that you yourself generated. The public would lynch you for it!

I want my NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT DATA RESTORED…..NOW!

I just put in a solid week making progress on Dragon Age. I am on vacation. On my way back home tomorrow so I put a thumb drive into the PS3 they have here so I could finish the game at home. Imagine my dismay at finding out that all of my progress is locked to this specific console. This is a very frustrating limitation. Makes me want to never buy a game that has locked saves.

You usually can’t load save files from profile to profile.

  56. #56 by Nick Walters on March 10th, 2010

Well why do people sell them on ebay then? The guy who sell’s them say’s they work with other peoples and not mine. I have done it with FIFA before but a cant see why it’s a problem with RE5??!?

  57. #57 by Tosh on March 10th, 2010 [ 1102 Points ]

Some are “locked” to a PSN ID instead of a console. Some are not, I guess RE5 is one of those that are “locked”.

  58. #58 by Nick Walters on March 10th, 2010

I suppose Tosh. I have just noticed an update through the internet on it to version 2.0 which may have something to do with it. Look’s like i’ll have to do it properly and not cheat lol

  71. #71 by spawnvader on July 8th, 2010

I’ve heard from several sources that LittleBigPlanet is also locked, even though I was able to copy it to an SD card. Can anyone confirm? My 60GB died a week ago, and even though that’s the only game I’ve played since my last backup, I made a lot of progress on it and I’m only 4 trophies away from the platinum.

Really hate the thought of having to start from scratch when I pick up a slim in the next week or so….

  72. #72 by SaotomeRanma on July 9th, 2010

Trinity Universe has a locked system data file, but unlocked save files.

  73. #73 by MacDead on July 17th, 2010

I have 3 PS3s at home (I know, seems overkill, but not when you realize I have one for each major room) one in my Bedroom (3rd floor), one in the Family Room (Main Floor) and one in my office (1st floor). I can’t play games like this in front of my kids, but when they are gone, I would love to continue to take Ezio into the Family Room to do some carnage and damage and continue on his quest for vengeance. Plus there are some Templars about who need a serious ass kicking.

Locking a save game to a machine is a ridiculous way of trying to preserve the integrity of trophies (which for me I could care less about). Locking them to your PSN-ID seems to be a far better way to deal with the situation, but I don’t know if that is up to Sony or to the game developer. I would have to say the Game Developer since I can take my RTTS pitcher from console to console.

yep, I always backed up my latest save to USB stick just before firing up a gaming session. I’ll happily email you a save game if you want to see for yourself :)

I’m curious to know where Josh R is getting info from, perhaps he can provide a citation? This is also the first I’ve heard that FO:NV is also copy protected but I dont have a copy to verify …

Is it possible to transfer game saves at all?

Coz I had a nice amount of cash on NFS Pro Street, I know its old and all but I love it, and somehow managed to lose all my saved game data.

So now if I just feel like playing it I have to either sit with a crappy car or get to the point where I can drive something nice again haha..

So can I get the saved game somewhere else?
