Uncharted 2 “impossible” on Xbox 360. |

Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra stated on Eurogamer that Uncharted 2 would be impossible to make for the Xbox 360 and be completely like-for-like.

“It’s the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive,” he explained, revealing that “every single bit” of the 25GB disc had been filled.

“You can play the entire game without loading. We don’t require an install. We’re doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs [Synergistic Processing Units]. The quality of the depth of field we have, you can’t do that on the Xbox.

Its great to hear a developer is getting the best out of the console (even if it is in-house) and i hope to see more in the future. Unlike the shambles such as Ghostbusters

That’s great news. We need more games like this.

Is Naughty Dog really an in-house studio or just a developer that has a great relationship with sony? Not quite 3rd party, but not 1st party?

  • Naughty Dog is first party. We’re lucky to have them. They are geniuses.

I’ve already preordered Uncharted 2, it looks amazing, and Naughty Dog is amazing… But I wish they didn’t say petty console wars stuff like this. I’m more interested in the design of the game rather than arguing which hardware design from ’05/’06 can squeeze out more pixels and graphic effects….

Yes, Naughty Dog is 100% owned by Sony. Although, to be honest, they have their own offices, and they operate with some independence. The line between Naughty Dog and Insomniac (completely independent, but only does exlusive games on Sony platforms) is very vague.

Well, I’m glad to have them as well as a former 360 user 🙂

Uncharted was one of the first titles I played on my ps3 and I enjoyed every minute of it. Even my wife thought it was cool and she enjoyed watching some of the interviews by the cast of uncharted 2.

If you’re looking for some non first party praise for the PS3, here it is finally!
Cevat Yerli from Crytek demoed their cryengine3 at GC09. He claims that all the techniques and effects the were present in Crysis is now possible on PS3. “The PS3 runs at the top level [of consoles.]”

[“Our PS3 development team has merged with our PC team and they are driving each other”]

Watch this video to the end. I think this is worthy of a blog entry, IMO.

    @ kicks:
Given their independence, but relationship with Sony, I’d label them more as 2nd party developers. They aren’t quite a 100% Sony office (due to their independence), but they only make games exclusive to Sony consoles. Though, Sony did buy them out, so they may be first party now with more creative freedom, but a few years back, they would have been 2nd party.

This is my game of the year…possibly this generation….but that term is spouted too easily and while true-ish…it isn’t necessarily the whole truth.

The games architecture is built on 8core technology. So therefore it would be impossible to bring it to a 3 core processor.

Fact of the matter is…if the game was built from the ground up…it probably could be done on the 360 with the right devs behind it.

with that said….the term “2nd party” isn’t a real industry term. You are either first or third. Naughty Dog is a wholly owned Sony company. They get their paychecks from Sony, and Sony tells them when to do what etc.

Companies like Insomniac are 3rd party despite their exclusive console development practices as they are not owned by Sony whatsoever.

then I hereby claim the term second party as a developer who is owned by a larger publisher who designs the hardware, and makes games solely for that hardware, but has full creative control on the product being developed 😛
