its perfectly reasonable, since the warranty is only 1 year (yours lasted nearly twice the length of the manufacturer's warranty)! There is no "inherent" defect. If there were, then an even higher percentage of units would become defective and the failure rate would be more in line with the 360's 24% as opposed to the PS3's 10% or so (1/10 is a lot better than 1/4). Only reason why the 360 and PS3 fail more than the Wii (in comparison) is the number of components that could fail.

The moment you bought the system (or any system for that matter), you agreed that, after the one year warranty, you would be held responsible for payment of any repairs needed for the system and Sony would not be held responsible for any kind of hardware failure. Here's the warranty:

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Warranties/PS3

If the PS3 failed nearly as many times as the 360 has (which was found to actually be a manufacturing defect), then Sony may have extended the warranty, but since their problems aren't nearly as specific as the 360's, there's no solid ground to prove it's a manufacturing defect. Here's a graph by a warranty firm who deals with consoles showing the most common failures for each console:

<img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/5d3ryr.jpg"/>

You can read where I originally obtained the info here: http://www.ps3blog.net/community/other-consoles/360-failure-rate-24/

As you can see, disc read errors account for only about 4.7% of consoles in a 2 year period (which is the biggest issue with PS3, but it's not a widespread issue). Compare that to the 360's RROD which, in a 2 year period, the chances of the system failing and getting that error is over 12%, which is a significant difference.

Thus, in conclusion, the number of disc read errors is more remote (not even hitting 5%) than you think, so Sony isn't going to be adjusting the warranty any time soon, especially since it failed 10 months after the warranty expired

I have a 40gb ps3 which is only 1 year 10 months old which has recently stopped reading any type of disc.
Sony's response was that they haven't heard of this happening before and to send it in for repair at a cost of £99!
This is of course unreasonable as the unit has not been fit for purpose for a reasonable amount of time. I am awaiting a call from the supervisor.
Sony are letting themselves down by not admitting that some of their units have an inherent fault.

lol, thanks guys! Checking news around the web, Watchdog has been getting a LOT of heat on this subject, and rightfully so. It's almost as if there is some kind of conspiracy going on like Microsoft was in bed with the show's producers or something to give Sony a bad image.
