Facebook coming to PS3? Update – True!

fbps3
Still only a rumour but I’m pretty close to calling this official. Looks like the PS3 will be getting Facebook integration into the XMB and Gamer card colours and possibly more features too. Facebook integration would be great, I wonder if it will work along the same lines as Uncharted 2′s integration of Twitter? Maybe there will be some more features but then of course this could all be fake too, hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

[Update]
Eurogamer have confirmed that it is indeed true;

The official Sony UK PR line is that there will be more information on this “very shortly”.

So a Firmware update must be round the corner?

integration would be nice, but if you really wanted to use Facebook now, you could do so through the browser anyway

    Yeah but the browser sucks.

yeah, I agree, but at least it has one. And I like it better than the Wiis. What Sony should do to really give Microsoft a kick in the pants is a console-friendly Firefox browser.

I guess you’re right, at least it does have one, hopefully with some work they can make it better. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have a keyboard either.

Not sure where I read this but it was something to do with Sony and Google and the close ties they have.

Maybe integrate the Google Chrome browser, not that I have a problem with Firefox, also maybe integrate the Google Search Engine into Dashboard so if your searching for something on the PS3 you can find it that much quicker.

I know they have a Google search feature on the PSP, which is accessible through both the browser and the PSP’s XMB.

Keyboard definitely helps, though. That’s what I used when I made my PS3 Netflix walkthrough video a few posts down

And I never thought about the Chrome browser, I hope something is implemented though. Forgot about them working with Google on other fronts

Luke, You can Google search straight off the XMB already

XMB > Network > Internet Search.

@Trev. That’s GM – Luke… I didn’t go to evil medical school to be called Luke thank you very much ;-) kidding.

Trev what I meant was something so you can search your playstation kinda like Google Desktop. You have a bunch of songs or movies on your PS3 just search for it and you get it.

@JimmyMagnum I did watch your review of Netflix on the PS3 and it really seems like the keyboard makes a differece. Hopefully I didn’t just waste 5 bucks on a ps/2 to usb connector for nothing ;-)

lol, yeah a keyboard for use in the browser makes it a bit more tolerable lol. Hopefully the adapter works for ya! I know my kb is a USB one I bought back in the PS2 days to make entering in gameshark/action replay cheats a lot easier and faster lol (man I miss those)

I don’t know why anyone bothers with the browser on the PS3 anyway. I just use my iPhone or my laptop. Much better experience.

    @Blackstaffer

I agree with you, but if you’re on the ps3 and want to check something out. It would be nice to get something that works well since it’s there anyway.

Toss me into the group with all the browser hate. Call me crazy but I’m glad MS keeps focused on bringing the new features to it’s system (like the one we’re talking about now) instead of tacking on a browser that isn’t worth using. I get how the kids without a PC in the bedroom might be able to use it in a limited fashion… but for the rest of us, we bought PCs for a reason! Or at least I did. I did buy a cheap USB keyboard for when I’m entering long codes and passwords on the PS3… but I’m not about to hook it up while I watch movies on Netflix and/or try to post on Facebook.

But mostly, I was just curious at how many of the posters here seem to dig the Facebook app now that it’s on the PS3. As a 360 feature it was soundly trashed… now it’s a welcome addition to the PS3. Just as Netflix was… and as any exclusive that jumps platforms is. I’m not saying you guys shouldn’t be excited for your platform of choice but there’s no need to constantly try to trash the other guys.

I will soon be able to access Facebook from Verizon Fios (can currently), Xbox 360 (next week), and PS3 (next few months), and my laptop sitting in my living room with the other 3 devices.

I will shortly have FOUR ways to access Facebook from the same room. Shame I don’t have a smart phone because then I would have 5 ways.

I don’t see the point really. Phone and Computers should be plenty and all that is needed to cover 99% of us. Another feature i will never use.

I wish they would create an app like function that could be used in game. If you wanted to see movie times, weather, etc that would be a much more useful feature. If it takes more than 1-2 minutes to do, I’ll use my PC. quick reference stuff would be nice.

kind of like the Windows sidebar? I think that’d be pretty nice. make it fully customizable.

Anyway, apparently, back at E3, it was announced Facebook was heading to PS3 anyway, it’s just the 360 had a working Beta at the time, so this isn’t actually “news”, but more of a “heads up, its on its way”

Also, facebook on PSP is easy and quick as well, seeing as it uses the mobile portal when you go to the site. Layout is also nice and mimicks the phone, but you have a larger screen so it looks better, too

@JimmyStewart, The reason people talk “trash” about every single thing on the xbox 360 is because of having to pay a monthly fee to access them. While I do not approve of doing so methods, I believe each console is a unique experience on its own. While the 360 has cheap thrills and exciting games that does not usually have deep story lines, rather on the PS3 you’ll find a more enriched experience in story-like terms.
(Exclude Mass Effect, any games made by the oblivion team, and lost odyssey)

@JimmyMagnum I have been improving in my grammar skills, yes?

lmao, a bit. You kind of messed up on this sentence though:

“While I do not approve of doing so methods…”

    you meant “such” right? :P

but yeah, we only complain because those services are only available to users who pay for Live. Live’s value is not worth the price of admission. If they really want to charge for their service, they should just make it $25 a year. At $50, I can go out and buy a multiplatform PS3 game (with $10 more) and come home and play it online for free
