I wouldn't say I'm "loyal" to Sony. But most of the studios that I respect work closely with Sony and I respect Sony as a mangerial team for cultivating, coordinating, and motivating all that talent so well.

I don't think innovation is in danger of dying at all and I don't think we will ever see a single console platform.

Today, all the serious 3D games are on a dedicated Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo device and that system is going to be completely flipped over the next 3-10 years.

Based on quite a few posts here... It's VERY obvious that Sony fans are definitely brand loyal. I think overall that's a terrible thing and not one that should be encouraged. If the single console fanboys had their way it would ensure our trip to a single console future where innovation would DIE.

That said, sure. This post makes sense. As the younger generation who grew up on the Playstation brand ages they'll associate more closely with those games on those systems. And of course Japan will continue to hate on any console American... so yup yup and yup. I still have a CRAZY fondness for Sega, more so than Atari or Nintendo just because it was the first console I was able to keep in my own room! Once the Dreamcast died so did my concern for console wars.

On a side note isn't it bizarre how things have changed. It used to be Sega and Nintendo... all they did was make games. They were game companies, it somehow seemed more honest. Now we've got Sony and Microsoft... all they didn't do was make games. Now that's all their really it. It just seems dirty. Ah well as I said before, it's not what brand they stamp on the outside of the box that counts...

In the U.S, the mass market seems to jump to a different console manufacturer almost every generation. That's definitely not loyalty...

RE5 may have sold more on PS3 worldwide, but in the US, it sold way more on 360. That is somewhat of a counterexample as well.

Final Fantasy was never big seller on Microsoft systems (I think they only got a late port of FFXI), but either through Microsoft marketing, or system war stuff, or just the whims of the hivemind, that's a big profile name now in the 360 userbase and it will sell comparably to the PS3 in the US. Worldwide is of course a very different issue.

But there is some "loyalty" in that people buy what they are familiar with and games that they are used to. I would expect Bioshock 2 to sell more on 360 for the same reason.

"total worldwide PS3 sales of RE5 topped 2.58m copies, closely followed by the 360’s 2.42m."

At the largest selling game in this list, ~2.5m is a drop in the ocean - how many systems have they sold together, about 40-50 million?

The article is couched as if the choice is equal, but surely it isn't - most people wouldn't have both machines, and chances are more ps3 buyers had a ps2 before (almost certainly given the numbers really but i think you get what i mean). The only brand loyalty is probably only to the game franchise itself, and that's more 'i liked the last one, i want more' than simply 'buy the name'.

Also the game style - xboxians seem to love their fps war shooters for instance.
