The Weekly Recap (January 17-23)

This Week
Quite a bit this week (though, no major game announcements). First off, Trev wrote another review, this one for Assassin’s Creed II. Darrin has another pretty popular opinion piece as well (as always). here’s also been some rumors flying around, like GTA getting another possible episode (though, many feel the game isn’t popular enough to warrant one anymore). And the appearance of Cloud (of Final Fantasy fame) possibly making an appearance in a future game.

One piece of news that did surface, though, is that the PS3′s Motion Controller has been delayed until Fall, so it’s going to be out there around the same time Natal is supposedly going to be out as well (though, interestingly, Microsoft decided to drop the hardware processing within the camera to opt for a software solution, so it may not be as powerful as previously thought, considering it’s going to take up some of the processing power from the console now).

There’s also been some Gran Turismo stuff out there as well, including the game possibly already making a profit and some real versus in-game stuff (from both Trev and I).

Other than that, be sure to check out Eddie’s article on the brain and his article about the PS3 supposedly being hacked.

Also note, we’ve got quite a few more QuickNews articles in this week, so if you happen to miss those smaller news stories, be sure to check them out in the QuickNews tab. You can also comment on those stories as well (on the side bar, just click on the #).

Hopefully this coming week will prove to be a little more eventful, though, seeing as we’re constantly getting closer and closer to the big release window!

Community News

Alrighty, this week in the community, I’m sure most of you have noticed that the Shoutbox (the Live Chat) has been updated. This was mainly in response to spam flooding the chat over the past few days (or, at least, I assume so). Beyond the look, it now also shows your Gravatars, notifies you when there’s a new response, and allows for the ability to private message other people.

I’ve also taken the liberty to update a few weekly articles with the Tab feature (well, a couple; the New Game Releases and the PlayStation Store Global Update), which allows for a cleaner look. I like it a LOT more than the “Read the Rest of this Story” link.

Anyway, not much else going on in the community. Just keep in mind we like the community to get involved, so please register and become an active member! We also appreciate it if you guys would sign up to submit news as well. Well, here are the recognitions this week (22 total)

Geohot (Original Iphone Hacker) Claims to Have Hacked the PS3

10qxezs

Very interesting to see where this goes but the hack seems to be extremely impractical. As of right now he still can not play games from what I understand, but he is further then anyone before him. He is a very trustworthy hacker (oxymoron?), so he is most likely telling the truth.

This could lead to custom firmwares and emulators without linux in the future, but I don’t see any future for burned blu-ray games. Its highly impractical even with above average technical knowledge.

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long :)

As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.

Nomura “No FFVII Remake Yet, Cloud Could Make Another Appearance”

final-fantasy-ps3-20050519082736180

In the most recent Famitsu, there is a special tribute to Final Fantasy VII’s main character, Cloud Strife. It showed images of all the games he was in and his cameo appearances etc. There was a short discussion with his creater, Tetsuya Nomura who concluded that FFVII Remake is not being developed at this time. He really wants to do it, and he is aware that the fans want it as well, but “as of right now, development has not started rolling.”

However he added that it is very possible that Cloud with guest-star in another game in the near future, in a similar way to how he was featured in Dissidia.

One could conclude by Nomura’s words….FFVII is just a matter of time. It sounds as if it 100% is happening, just not yet.

We do know Nomura is working on several other games at this time.

PS3 Version of Just Cause 2 Includes Video Capture

Story
Square Enix has announced that the PS3 version of Just Cause 2 will get an exclusive feature, detailed below:

Square Enix London Studios, a part of Square Enix Europe, today announced that Just Cause 2 for the PlayStation 3 will ship with a built-in video capture feature, allowing players to record clips of their greatest in-game exploits and upload directly to YouTube.

Watching the video above, it might prove to be quite a fun feature considering all the stuff you’re able to do in it. I know Just Cause was a mediocre title, but here’s hoping the sequel can pull off what the original wanted to, but fell short of. The capture feature supposedly has a 10 minute record length (the same as YouTube’s basic account limit), so, according to the press release, it will allow players to also do walkthroughs, speedruns, etc. Pretty neat stuff, the title definitely looks worth checking out!

Press Release

Built-In Video Capture To Ship With Just Cause 2

PlayStation players to publish their greatest achievements to YouTube

Friday 22nd January/… Square Enix London Studios, a part of Square Enix Europe, today announced that Just Cause 2 for the PlayStation 3 will ship with a built-in video capture feature, allowing players to record clips of their greatest in-game exploits and upload directly to YouTube.

With some of the most incredible emergent action sequences seen in any game, Just Cause 2 frequently features moments which simply defy description. Moments where the physics, gameplay and AI all come together to create an over-the-top stunt or spontaneously chaotic scene of carnage players will want to watch again and again. By activating Just Cause 2’s video capture feature, players will be able to automatically record the last 30 seconds of gameplay directly to the PlayStation 3’s hard drive and upload to YouTube.

BASE jumped from the highest bridge in the game? Captured. Jumped out of a jet fighter and crashed into an oil rig? Recorded. Parachuted off a cliff onto a passing helicopter, laying waste to a military harbour with missiles, before ejecting, skydiving down through enemy flak, grappling soldiers to passing aircraft, leaving nothing but the smoking remains of the military might? Saved, uploaded and published for the world to see.

Also available from the in-game menu is a 10 minute capture feature which allows players to create more detailed and planned presentations. Gamers will be able to capture and share in-game mission walkthroughs, create online speed-run competitions, direct their own South East Asian-inspired Machinima and more, with the best YouTube videos linked from the official website allowing users to vote on their favourites, with prizes awarded for the best of the best.

As Rico Rodriguez, the Agency’s most powerful weapon, players must take on the island of Panau and its military regime in order to track down Rico’s former boss and mentor, Tom Sheldon, who has gone rogue with millions in Agency cash and intel. Using a unique grapple and parachute combination, there is no vertical limit as the air becomes your playground: grapple a passing plane in flight, hijack helicopters, BASE jump from the tallest buildings or mountains and leave a trail of chaos and destruction in your wake. Just Cause 2 offers players the freedom to tackle missions any way they choose and, with over 100 vehicles and countless upgrades and collectibles, the choices for relentless adrenaline-fuelled action are limitless.

Just Cause 2’s video capture and upload feature will be available exclusively for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Just Cause 2 will also ship for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows® and will be released under the EIDOS brand portfolio. All formats will release in-stores on March 23rd, 2010, in North America and March 26th, 2010, in Europe, Middle East, and Australasia. More information is available on the official website at www.justcause.com.

Still On The Fence About Getting Uncharted 2?

Still on the fence about getting Uncharted 2? On January 28th, the same day the first DLC pack for Uncharted 2 will be released, there will be a single player demo that you’ll be able to download. No idea which level it will be, but no matter which they choose, any of them will work just fine!
