Sonic the Hedgehog 4 – Sega Gets it Right

I am so glad that they’ve revealed this title! If you’re a Genesis kid, you know of the Sonic games (hell, even if you’re just a gamer). The 2D platformer makes a return the way it should have years ago, by keeping levels 2D (and, this time instead of using sprites, everything is modeled in 3D). The title is called Sonic the Hedgehog 4 – Episode 1 (meaning there will most likely be more in the future). This is the kind of Sonic game I’ve been looking forward to for a long, long time, but I’ll actually have to give credit to Capcom, since they’ve probably inspired Sega to do this by releasing the new Mega Man games on PSN (and 360/Wii). The game will be released this Summer.

UPDATE: According to IGN, the game will run at 1080p on 360 and PS3 versions, while the Wii version will get motion control. They’re going to be reworking the themes and style of the music as well, and the only new move is the homing attack from newer games.

Cool, used to love the originals until they tried to get fancy and screwed up the entire franchise.

yeah their undoing was trying to go 3D (Sonic 3D blast starting that trend). I’m stoked they went back to their roots with this one.

I would of said the recent New Super Mario Brothers and Bionic Commando Rearmed were also inspirations for this. People want to play updated versions of their old games they love. Even all the Final Fantasies are being re made.

Well, look at that: an episodic classic Sonic game! Let’s see if all the haters of the 3D Sonic games now put their money were their mouth is and actually buy this one…

@Trev: good point lol. Even then, BCR was still Capcom (and Street Fighter 4 is another example) :P and Nintendo was probably inspired by them as well

    OH HELL YES!

I have no shame in admitting I’m a huge Sonic fanboy, Sonic 3 to this day still remains my favourite game of all time. Personally, I loved Sonic Unleashed and thought it was the best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 1 on Dreamcast which was also awesome, but this just looks superb.

    SEGA FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!

Sonic never translated well as a 3D game. This should sell like crazy when it is released. I hope it does so they continue to make them.

it would sell great, but the sonic fanboy elite wont get it because, according to an article I read on N4G, a lot of elitists are angry that has has green eyes and is tall/thin/legs are too skinny, and the homing attack, etc.

To me getting it would be putting out the game as a bigger release. Something like New Super Mario Bros. That’s an event in and of itself. It doesn’t seem like a Live Arcade game (or PSN game) is a proper re-introduction of old school Sonic.

Still, it’s the first time in a while I feel VERY optimistic about the final product. I’ve always tried to get back into Sonic with every version of the game since the last good console release (Sonic for the Sega CD if you ask me), but they’ve each gotten progressively worse.

I was just telling my wife about the Dreamcast and VMUs. I kinda wish they’d be able to reintroduce that with those downloadable Chao pets!
