Andy, they did not / cannot acquire any memory by removing the "other os" support. The other os feature does not continuously eat up any memory during gameplay, tho it may effect the size of the firmware size.

If it had caused games to use less memory, just because Sony lets users to install "other os", it would have been very stupid for sony to have included it in the first place.

The fat Ps3's still have the other os feature anyway, although it is rumoured to be removed in future revisions, for other reasons.

My guessing is the extra 70mb comes from both optimizations of the existing PS3 Os, and the conservative estimates of Sony. They probably reserved too much memory for the OS, being not able to know how much the essential / cosmetic features they wanted to add later on. Let's remember that PS3 didn't even do background downloading of content when it first came out. It didn't have in game XMB, much needed feature..

They had probably reserved a conservative amount of memory early on, but after they implemented these with smaller memory foot-prints, they started giving back the memory they had reserved.

By removing 70MB of features from the OS (e.g. Install other OS support), they've given a tiny bit of room back to Game Developers.

I'd rather have the 70MB of features please!
