Sony: Microsoft or Nintendo Will Kick Off Eighth Console Generation | PS3Blog.net

Talk is starting up again about Sony’s next home console, but according to Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, they likely won’t be the ones to kick the next generation off.

Speaking to Develop, Yoshida said he believes either Nintendo or Microsoft will release their next generation consoles first.

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.

“Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.
“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

“Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.” I can honestly say i agree with Yoshida, I think the PS3 is going to have many more strong years. What do you guys think? Who’s gonna step into the next generation first? Nintendo? Microsoft? Or will Sony surprise?

Well, if the Wii is still selling Nintendo will be in no rush to release their next console. My bet is that Microsoft will release their next Xbox a year before Sony or Nintendo do.

  • Microsoft for 50 pts lol

  • Ravenitrius

Maybe a random out of nowhere company would step in. Who knows. The possibilities are endless.

I just got my ps3 5 months ago… why should i buy another one to waste my money that quick?

My guess would be NIntendo first, then maybe Sega’s return to the video games market, followed by Atari, and then finally Microsoft and Sony.

  • I can see Sony being the last to release their next system. Microsoft will want to be the first on the market again with a bluray drive. Then watch Sony’s PS4 require digital downloads only.

Nintendo has been very clear about their plans… or at least Iwata has. They’ release BEFORE Sony, but only once Sony has a set release date. It happened with the Wii and Iwata has made it company policy to NEVER AGAIN release after Sony considering what happened in the Gamecube era.

Microsoft likes the lead they have over the PS3 by releasing the 360 early at a huge loss, so let’s see if the decide to do the same this time.

  • If this happens, I hope this time Sony doesn’t come out with an inferior gfx chip.

  • @sakinah: I don’t see Bluray games going away anytime soon. Sony itself admits people likes boxed media.

I doubt Microsoft will adopt Bluray, they’re heading for digital downloads, it also gives them tighter control over re-sales…as-in…you can’t.

I think Sony would want to be there from the start, I think they felt the pain of releasing a year after the 360…however, they always said the PS3 had a 10 year lifespan…just look at the PS2, still going strong.

Wii will need a big hardware leap for their next revision, people want HD and 3D too much these days.

  • The next console company will be Surprise Google. Here’s my reasoning. Google is set to deliver the Google TV. It will have internet capabilities and be a fully networked media device. Essentially all of the hardware of a PC dedicated to delivering Media ( internet and video) to your TV. Google would need to support all the needed middleware software. OPenGL, Networking, and graphics. And on the store front they have the android Phone OS that developers are developing games for already. They also have a store to deliver all of these games/apps digitally. Add in a Blueray peripheral if need be for boxed games and Voila. Google is the next Console manufacturer. They will actually outsource the hardware, but MS does that now so It’s just a brand exercise.

Damn, I think a company like Google could absolutely jump into the gaming scene, does that mean they would survive? I doubt it but you never know, look at Microsoft. Of course Microsoft has only really survived because they have millions of dollars to throw at their failing systems.

  • Even though the 360 has done really well in sales, Microsoft has lost a fortune due to such a high rate of hardware failures and with the PS3 clearly being a far superior machine, Microsoft will likely be the first out of the gate. They are going to try to get the jump on Sony again in the hopes of completely taking control of the market.

  • Then it will be Nintendo with their next silly, gimicky machine that the casual gaming horde will jump onto.

  • I read an article a year ago or so that SONY said themselves that after Blu-ray it will all be digital content. Microsoft will have to do something because DVD’s are hitting their max preventing them from really doing a lot more than they have done.

Wii is still king but that is because most families get it because it’s a party system. In my opinion it really lacks everything else. Games, graphics, it’s not even high definition and it’s missing Blu-ray which is clearly king of the platform that holds media. It wasn’t announced that long ago that Blu-rays will now hold 128gbs even though the PS3 won’t be capable of getting a firmware update to support it… so we are all screwed at least with the older models.

I am guessing that the next gens are going to more geared towards downloadable content but seeing how that worked out for the PSP GO I am not sure how quickly every1 will want to jump in on that.

I am guessing that SONY will be the last to create a new console as it is only now that they are starting to hit their stride. Blu-ray has clearly conquered. The next big thing is 3D and I think SONY will do with that what they have done with Blu-ray. Their system is currently hot, they have MOVE coming out which will have better games then the Wii does, and they have improved the technology significantly which I believe will make the PS3 that much more in demand.

  • I want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
And you et an account on Twitter?

  • They should all agree to release at the same time so fanboys can’t use “oh xbox came out first” as an excuse.

  • Eric

all i hope is that Sony waits until releasing a new console cuz i got my PS3 almost a year ago and i would like it to last another 2-3 years b4 it becomes ‘old’…

  • I like to play Ps3 than other brand 😀

  • Maybe apple comes with new products. iConsole?

Who knows? But I prefer playstation. It is simple and great!

  • Thanks a bunch. Ran across this excellent post when I was googling for these links. Cheers
