Leave a Voice Mail for PS3Blog.net

Still thinking of a good use for this honestly. I want to hear your thoughts on this as well. Some ideas:

  • Give us your thoughts on recent blog posts
  • Talk about recent gaming news
  • Give us feedback
  • Leave a message for a co-writer
  • I can embed these voice mails into a blog post if you’d like so others can hear it. Maybe have a weekly voice mail post?

How do you leave a voicemail you ask? Well it’s on the sidebar at the bottom of the community portion of the site. Click it and enter your phone number and Google will auto-magically call you and connect you to PS3Blog.net

It will always go straight to voice mail though, so don’t expect anyone to pick up the phone. If you leave a Voice Mail please use your name from the blog if your a member so we know who it is.

Note: This Google number is located in IL, USA.

Hupit Gaming

The game I play the most when not getting together with friends in person is MW2. I’m not a great player by any stretch of the imagination, but I enjoy getting into a game and trying for the objective. (If you’re gonna play like it’s TDM in a Domination game, you’re a twit.)

As an older gamer with reflexes that aren’t so good, I try to find other ways to improve my game. Watching the YouTube videos by gamers like WoodysGamertag, sasbenjr, TmarTn, and ONS1AUGH7 has helped considerably. Where before I never used to go positive, it’s now not an uncommon occurrence. Which is a great thing for me. This has really increased my enjoyment of the game.

But there’s another thing that has increased my enjoyment of MW2 even more. And that’s playing with a full party of like-minded individuals. When everyone on your team is going for the objective, it changes things. When everyone on your team has a headset and is communicating, it’s something awesome. When everyone on your team knows not to grab the last flag in Domination, and to stay out of their spawn, it makes your score and your team’s score go way up. I’ve called in more harrier strikes in the last week than I had in the previous two months, just because I was part of a team that was working together.

I recently invited a real-life friend to join me in one of these full-party gaming session, and he used exactly that word – “awesome”. Like me, he was used to playing by himself. Now, also like me, he wants to play with a full party.

So now you’re wondering (or not, given the title), “how do I get to be part of this?”. Easy as pie. If you’re a gamer who likes to play the game as it’s meant to be played, go to Hupit Gaming. Register, put in your information, and find some like-minded players. Don’t just wait for someone else to invite you. Invite them yourself. It’ll make all the difference. The site isn’t just for Call of Duty, though there’s a big emphasis on it. Woody made a video about the site, linked here, in case you’re wondering how to use it.

I’ve invited lots of people from Hupit to be my friends, and now we rock together on a regular basis. It’s great. My friends list is now up to about fifty or so, and there’s usually lots of people online that I can join up with. To sum up, Hupit has changed my MW2 life for the better. You might want to try it too. (If you do, please reply to this post, I’d like to know!)

Contest Reminder: Weekly Recap Anniversary Giveaway!

This is a reminder to everyone that we have a contest going on (and if you’ve read the Weekly Recap, you would have known about it). Basically, you have to get a picture and place staff avatars within the picture, followed by sending points to the ‘lottery’ username. Here are more in-depth details (also, you only need one image, regardless of how many entries you do; more images do not increase chances of winning):

Part one, you must create an image superimposed with the avatars of the staff members (you can use either just one, or a combination of avatars). You don’t have to be a professional or anything, but it must, at least, show some effort. If all you have is Paint, that’s perfectly fine. Just be creative!

Part two? You will, then, have to submit points to the Lottery. Each lottery entry will be 250 points, with a maximum of 1000 points (4 lottery entries; please donate each 250 points separately).

The prizes are as follows:

  • 1st Prize: $50 PSN Giftcard
  • 2nd Prize: PS3Blog.net T-Shirt
  • 3rd Prize: Points refunded, plus another 500

For easy access to staff avatars (backgrounds removed), Tosh has prepared a zip off all of them here, except for Darrin’s, which is available here, but will need to manually remove the background stuff.

The contest ends July 31st at 11:59PM Arizona time. More details, and more examples of entrants so far, after the jump.

Sony Let Microsoft Have Kinect

Anton Mikhailov explains why they let Microsoft have the Kinect technology. Skip to the 9:00 mark if you want to see that. They talk about how Kinect has trouble tracking people with varying heights, for example 5′ 7″ vs 6′ 4″. How they need to be far away from the camera for it to see your whole body. With the PlayStation Move just the “orb” need to be seen by the camera.

Near the end of the video Anton talks about the PlayStation Move and the XMB. He basically said it’s not the best option to control the XMB with motion. It would be tiresome going threw hundreds of songs and would have to be reworked if they where to control the XMB via Move. I agree with him on that. What do you think?

PS3 To Get Improved Disc-free Netflix Client By October

Netflix previously said that a disc-less client would come to the PS3 in 2010. Now, we are getting a more definite release window.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings:

“Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements,”

Many presume that the client is currently disc-based for contractual/legal reasons rather than technical ones.

Awesome news regardless.

The Six Weirdest PlayStation Ads

No matter what Xbox fanboys say, Microsoft can never top Sony in the ad department. Most of the ads for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 were rather creepy or revolting. And this post will highlight (or lowlight) the best (or worst) of them.

No. 6: “You’re saying that the PlayStation is Jesus? I’m so confused.”

The Vatican did object to this ad, which only circulated in Italy, where 90% of the population is Catholic, and most of the people who saw it were deeply offended. But, in all honesty, this looks like the MySpace profile pic of a creepy priest.

Too be honest, I have no idea who Sony is trying to appeal to. The caption,  PlayStation: 10 anni di passione, translates to ’1o years of passion’. A seemingly innocent caption. But, when coupled with the crown of thorns, and the film ‘The Passion of the Christ‘, which was published by uber-Catholic and uber-prejudiced Mel Gibson, it’s revealed that the ad is saying that the PlayStation is Jesus. And that’s not cool, especially in Italy.

It’s also, incredibly creepy.

It goes through a dummy and a sword, a RTS (real time strategy), chameleon and fireball tech demos. The chameleon demo was really cool, worth checking out the video just for that!

Sony uses these same tech demos to show 3rd party developers what the PlayStation Move can really do. Hopefully this inspires developers to step up there game create some unique ways to use the Move in games.
