Sony: Expect PS4 to Still Have Optical Drive

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai is ruling out a download-only future for the next-generation PlayStation consoles. Speaking in an interview with MCV, Hirai said Sony’s business will always require a physical discs in one way or another, despite being the first one to release the download-only PSP Go.

“We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn’t as robust as one would hope. There’s always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.”

This doesn’t mean that Sony will support physical discs all the way, well according to Hirai, it’s not happening anytime soon.

“To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme.”

14 Minutes of SOCOM 4

This video is taken from the demo that was shown at Gamescom last week. Travis Steiner, the lead designer, provides commentary, giving information on the missions and the characters. The mission they’re going through is the first of the campaign. Looks good I think. Anyone going to be picking this one up?

A SNES Shaped PlayStation Controller? And Explanation of the PlayStation Shapes

Have you ever thought to yourself how SONY decided what the PlayStation’s controller would look like when they were initially designing the system? Did you ever think that there may have been a few punches thrown here and there so the big cheeses could get their way when making the ultimate decision on what the controller should look like? Who do you think won in the end? The big management blokes or the guy that designed a controller with no idea on how popular the system would become?

Well, I sort of gave that away didn’t I? The chap that designed the controller, Teiyu Goto, was the man behind the success of what is now in millions of homes across the world. Goto joined SONY after graduating from Technical School in 1977, and has had the pleasure on working behind the scenes on the console designs and the controllers we have all come to love.

Initially, the management at SONY wanted to follow in the footsteps of the SNES, yes – the SNES!

Prepare in Advance for the Facebook/PS3Blog.net Move Giveaway!

As I mentioned in the original post we need at least 1,000 members, preferably more!
As of this writing we are at 615 fans.

Since the Move contest is a cross-promotional giveaway, we need Facebook fans who want to enter to leave their PS3Blog.net Usernames on this Facebook discussion for us to track. The contest will only be open to Facebook fans who are also registered on the site (and people registered on the site who are also on Facebook).

If you’re not on Facebook, it’s easy enough to create an account really quick. Only info you need to sign up is Name, Email, if you’re Male or Female and your birthday. You can hide your birthday from displaying on your profile on Facebook if you wish.

Another way to prepare for the giveaway is to earn points on PS3Blog.net! There are many ways to earn points, here is a full list on how to earn points. I’d recommend you have at least 250 – 1000 points. Because you’ll need those points for the giveaway ;)

More details on what the exact prizes are later this month, but I promise you it’s worth the wait.

I’m also closing comments on this post so people don’t leave comments here with their PS3Blog.net username, which should be done here.

[Review] Shank

Shank released at the perfect time, right between The Expendables and Machete, two films with excessive amounts of testosterone and a whole lot of ass kicking. Think of Shank as a lone psychopath that goes on a homicidal rampage to avenge the death of his beloved. It’s full of blood, over-the-top kills and macho dialogue.

“People’s Patch” Released for Joe Danger

This game is awesome. Let me just get that out of the way. Anyway, after releasing a demo last week, Hello Games has now released a new patch for the title that adds in a bunch of new features (and it’s free). Can’t say there’s anything not worth it! Here’s what’s included:

  • Level sharing and more Levels
  • Replays and YouTube support
  • Custom soundtracks
  • More multiplayer levels
  • New level editing props
  • Costumes
  • Downloadable tours
  • Hidden stuff!
  • Lots more

The game is about 200% better than it was, and that’s saying a lot. The official website will also be showcasing the best user-created levels, and are also holding a level design competition. This game is insane, and if you haven’t picked it up, with that patch alone, it’s totally worth it! In fact, read my review here.

Poll: Do you buy Collector’s Editions for games?

This poll is asking you whether or not your purchase special/collectors/limited editions of games, and why or why not. The poll is created by EdEN, and he’ll soon be getting his 200 points. As always, you can submit your own poll ideas here. And I apologize for letting EdEN have two polls in a row :P .

The previous poll asked you whether or not you have subscribed to PlayStation Plus. Here were the results:
