Gran Turismo 5 Surpasses Polyphony Digital’s Expectations |

If you’ve purchased a copy of Gran Turismo 5 this week then count yourself as one of over 500k gamers who have done the same.

GT5 has only been available worldwide for less than five days but the game has quickly surpassed Polyphony Digital’s expectations; so much that online servers for the game are buckling under the pressure .

“The data centre was set up to handle 500,000 connections but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result.”Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi told Eurogamer.

We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We’re going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions.”

Polyphony Digital also plans to release more patches and updates for the game on the 28th and sometime in in December. Expect a full PS3Blog review of GT5 soon.

Yes its a good game so far but the servers are really being overloaded. Hopefully the update tommorow fixes things

I haven’t had any problems on my end. Online was silky smooth for me. They test your connection speed I found out, to determine voice chat quality, race quality and number of cars you can handle as a game host (mine is 12 people, High Quality races, and very high voice chat quality)

but the weight and power restrictions will be a welcome addition for sure.

Dope game! Loving every minute and can’t out the controller down! I’ve had mixed results…
    hopefully it settles a bit.

  • Gran Turismo 5 Surpasses Polyphony Digital’s Expectations? Seriously? What were they expecting it to sell 2 copies? Although 500k isn’t amazing it’s a great start so far. I am sure it will sell several million especially with Xmas coming up. Hopefully they do some major tweaking on those servers.

  • Interesting, Eddie’s post: shows VGCHARTZ estimating that GT5 has sold 1.8 mill copies World Wide in 2 days. Not really sure how they come up with that figure but it’s interesting how Kazunori Yamauchi the creator of GT5 told Eurogamer that it has so far sold 500k.

Was the 500k in the first 24 hours? Because that is a massive jump in sales after day 1 and day 2

  • Luke, where do you get the 500k figure from? He says the data center was setup for 500k connections (probably concurrent connections), which was greatly exceeded.

If it’s over the 500k connections the servers were set to handle then doesn’t that mean that 500k people are playing oniline? That’s what I gathered from what Kaz said.

this game is amazing omfg played it at my cuzs house!!!!!! But i still love NFS hot pursuit

  • @Sakinah:
This does not necessarily mean “online play”. Gran turismo connects the servers even in single player mode. The server congestion was causing problems even in single player mode.

It means, more than 500k tried to connect to servers, and this lead to server problems. He didn’t say it sold 500k the first day, which Luke probably misunderstood. It probably sold much more.

  • Well in that case maybe the 1.8 million is right but than damn did they ever underestimate. Weren’t a crap load of people into this game?
