Official PlayStation App Announced For iPhone / iPod and Android Phones |

So who’s got an iPhone/iPod? Who’s got an Android phone? Regardless of whether you have an iPhone or an Android OS based phone, you will be able to reap the benefits of the Official PlayStation App that has been announced.

You will be able to download this new app from the respective app markets very soon. No specific date has yet been given, although I think you’ll be grabbing your app around sometime in January. Even though it’s good to keep your mobile phone updated to the latest firmware, you will need to be on OS4 on the iPhone / iPod and 1.6 on Android.

So, what benefits do you get?

  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

OK – benefits is a rather strong word to use as you don’t really get any ‘real’ benefits but I’m sure the app will be updated with some ‘exciting’ stuff over time. How is this different to what’s already in the app stores I hear you ask? Well, firstly the apps that are in the store are developed by third parties that have limited access to the PlayStation Blog APIs etc. Even though all of the above mentioned features are already available in the Third Party apps, SONY are in the better position to release updated versions of their app, unlike the Third Party developers who have limited updatability (is that a word?).

Even though this is exciting news for some, the PlayStation App will only hit markets in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands.

What would you like to see included in the app? What feature do you think will benefit the PS3 community?

  • Looks like this is an SCEE Europe-only thing for now. I tried posting questions about Canada/North America, but they were ignored.

  • Wow that all sounded great until the last part.

I use “PS3 iTrophies” app for my IPhone 4 and wifes Ipod Touch.
It work pretty well enough. But it tends to get glitched whenever Sony changes some code for the PS3 OS. But the guy that does the is pretty fast to fix it whenever Sony trips those Bugs.

  • Heres a link to the PS3 iTrophies site.

  • Looking forward to getting this!

Same here @Blackstaffer. The freaking Andriod has an awesome Xbox360 app that my friend just got yesterday. Lets you even message you friends. Come on SONY really? Get a freaking move on it!

Well, checking trophies on the go is always a nice ego boost. Interesting feature that might get here next year.

And the US gets shafted again. I can’t even log in to the Playstation Forums from my iPhone cause so much of their forums are flash based.

And I don’t trust 3rd party apps that’s out there right now letting you access trophys. I’m not giving some stranger not affiliated with Sony my PSN ID and password.. Nice try worlds laziest hacker.

Each day I’m getting closer to getting an xbox. Thanks for making it easier for me to choose Sony!

  • There is a PS3 Trophies app for Android too. It’s like iTrophies for the iPhone.

I hope that us Canadian/North American gamers get something like this.

  • Dave

    All very good and all, but;
    1) sony software is appalling.
    2) other people have done it sooner, better

It only does everything? yeah, right.

  • Wohoo it sounds great! I’m looking forward to try this!

  • hobbes

would be nice to be able to check messages, like today, would really be nice to do so without being at home on my ps3.

    idk depends on its price

  • yeah this is usually annoying…any apps all they do is view trophies and friends…but you can never MESSAGE them or things like that…which is LAME!

  • i use itrophys on the iphone and i like it. and like sinlock said he updates it often. I wish this was going to be available in the us. and really wish there was messaging capabilities.

  • I’ve tried all the iPhone apps including iTrophies. None of them are reliable. I hope that Sony’s, at least, is reliable.
