Yesterday the group behind the Homebrew Channels on the Wii announced live with a slide presentation at 27c3, that they have discovered the private keys for the PS3.
What does this mean? Custom firmware? Piracy? Homebrew?
There is a large potential for good and bad with this. Obviously the bad starts with piracy. We all know it will happen but thats not the worst of it. With these keys you can also expect to see online multiplayer cheaters with aim bots and more, trophy hackers and possibly even viruses.
The good that comes out of this will be emulators, linux, mkv support and things of this nature.
In short, these keys allow software to be designed directly for the PS3 just as any dev would do it. No custom firmware will be required to run this software, no jailbreaking and no hacking. Simply install the firmware and the PS3 will treat it as signed software from Sony itself.
The steps taken against Sony and the PS3 (the group is making it personal by saying Sony is a failure on multiple levels) have indeed put the system and software at risk. It is now the most open platform on the market today. Sony is very limited as to its responses as a firmware update will not correct this. The only things they can do is on the manufacturing level with new PS3’s that hit the shelves and they can whitelist all existing PS3 software but neither of these options are fullproof, both are expensive and time consuming. Its even possible that Sony will not be able to detect this on their end.
Only time will tell how this affects the PS brand.
UPDATE: Several hackers have confirmed that the Master Key for the PSP and PS3 has been found. Geohot even went as far as posting the keys online for everyone. These keys give hackers complete and total control over both systems on the same level as any developer and it is impossible for Sony to block.
UPDATE 2: AACS keys unlocked also….this is blu-ray movie encryption.
A foobear is cross between a pug dog (sometimes referred to as a “foo” dog) and the bear part being a horribly overweight guy who likes to refer to himself in the third person. The 408 ending is just an area code reference…so chew on that, it’s delicious.
Now that we have that out of the way, let me get directly to the point, fearless reader. The reason why we even come to this blog. The reason we huddle together in dark basements and even darker living rooms. It’s the reason I sit on my couch during most weekends and hiss like a vampire when my girlfriend opens the curtains or turns on a light. That little black technological wonder – the Playstation 3.
Recently over the holiday weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of my girlfriends’ parents stay with us. Her stepdad enjoys watching gameplay on my super awesome tv, usually commenting on the graphics and how smooth everything looks. It was then time to open presents on Christmas morning and low and behold I received the new Logitech 960 wireless headset as well as other mind exploding gifts. So as you can imagine I was eager to set up these ear goggles and rushed with baited breath and begin the daunting task of setting this headset up with my little black friend.
There has been a lot of talk about an Uncharted movie as of late especially when fans learned that Mark Wahlberg was set to play the action hero in the Uncharted series. One fan, even took it straight to David O. Russell the director that is behind the video game’s adaption to the big screen. Like many others he asked the director to reconsider staring Mark Wahlberg as the main hero and instead give the role to Nathan Fillion. Honestly there was a major out cry about this, I remember seeing tweet after tweet how disappointed fans were with the casting. The dust has seemed to settle but it appears that there is a glimmer of hope still, a glimmer that Nathan Fillion might still be a possibility for the movie.
When Joystiq interviewed Justin Richmond the Game’s Director and told him that they along with the masses wanted Nathan Fillion for the role he responded with the following:
Mark Wahlberg isn’t anywhere near to being confirmed to play Nathan Drake either — it’s just Hollywood scuttlebutt, apparently. Still, I dutifully told Richmond that the Joystiq Biomass had chosen, and Nathan Fillion has our vote. Message received, Richmond responded.
Looks like a treasure trove of PSOne games are headed our way via North America’s PSN. The following games were just rated by ESRB which means they are more then likely on the way for us to enjoy on the PS3 or PSP.
