Sony Demos 3D Head Mounted Display. Motion Tracking Next?

Sony is demoing a head mounted display (basically video glasses) with support for stereoscopic 3D. This is just a prototype and there is no word on actual release details.

Sorry for repeating myself, but full head tracking functionality would give this complete 3D immersion.

Early in 2010, I submitted an idea to PlayStation Share for 3D video glasses with head tracking… For some reason, my idea never showed up. I submitted the same idea twice more. It still never showed up. Maybe they don’t want bloggers to steal their thunder?

People don’t want to wear glasses and they are going to wear this?

What about people who hate flat panel TVs or touch screens or analog sticks? The whole glasses phobia thing is ridiculous and I don’t buy it.

Plus, you really can’t get full, look around, head tracking integration without a glasses-type form factor. If you stick with the current free standing TV form factor, people can’t turn their heads away from the screen.

Not sure which people hate flat panels since everyone pretty much has them. I hated the analog sticks but once I got used to them they are really not all that bad, the same goes for touch screens a lot of people want a physical keyboard but once they try out the touch screen it’s really not as bad as they think.

This headset is totally different, yes it would be cool for a few people but a major of people will not be wearing this thing.

Head tracking glasses could be more than a niche novelty for a few people.

It could be bigger than the last generation of motion tech.

It’s way more natural to use your neck and eyes to look around a game world instead of a thumb stick. This could be the next level of game world immersion.

Finally, I found someone banging this drum. I can’t believe there isn’t more talk about the potential for head mounted display + head motion tracking. You would still need a controller to actually move in the 3D space, but being able to look wherever you like in the 3D world perfectly naturally would just be amazing.

The only problems financially are (1) it’s going to add a couple hundred bucks minimum on top of the the game machine and (2) people can’t use their home theaters.

The only technical problems I see are (1) is it possible to wireless transmit two high resolution images at 60fps from the machine to the HMD? and (2) can the resolution be high enough? These are 720p, which seems really low for being an inch or two from the eye. iphone4-type pixel density might be sufficient.

Assuming both of those problems are solvable with current tech, I’m still thinking this would be $500 tech minimum, and so probably not around the corner. Still, it’s interesting that they filtered your idea from their suggestion system.

I totally agree with you on that Darrin. Real barrier for people would be the cost and games available for it when it’s available.

I would get it, sadly its not even up for prduction, but if SONY wants to get this right then they have to consider many things like how will it effec teh eye sight of people < biggest issue. Love how the from look like cyclopes shades!!! I would get it if it came in Black and Green lense or red lense. WEll id get eiter way

Looks awesome but also a little dangerous. Imagine the space you must need to play that thing.

You might accidently hit someone as you are playing or break something.
