Activision May Shut Down Black Ops Servers Due to PS3 Jailbreak Cheats [UPDATE]

Well it looks like the worst possible scenario has reared its ugly head. Rampant cheating has been confirmed in both Blacks Ops and Modern Warfare 2 by the devs due to recent PS3 security issues. An Activision rep has been quoted as saying that server closure is a “viable” solution.

One can only worry about the extirpation of future multiplayer games. Will Killzone 3 or Uncharted 3 be dilapidated with cheaters? Will Sony usher in a strong ban hammer? This is evidence that homebrew is a pandora’s box. Especially when cheats are established before any anecdotal evidence of any positive homebrew software.

UPDATE Per JD_2020′s Twitter Account:

PS3 Servers comments were taken out of context. @Treyarch’s committed to supporting the PS3 community with some great updates on the way.

They need to find a way to stop the cheating and punish the ones who do.

I never really understood why people would cheat in a video game anyway. Ruins the gaming experience imo…

Can someone explain exactly how everyone is “cheating”? I keep reading all of these stories, but its unclear of how its really effecting me. Are these cheaters the reason I have lag for 2 seconds, then when it unlags… I’m dead.

  3. #3 by pedro on January 19th, 2011 [ 39949 Points ]

harsh measures… but sometimes, that’s the only language many understand…

  4. #4 by Blackstaffer on January 19th, 2011

Sony HAS TO start banning consoles NOW. Ban all the cheaters. Make it comprehensive, make it public.

  5. #5 by Eddie L. Headley on January 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

I agree Henning. They need to start banning immediately.

  6. #6 by Luke on January 19th, 2011 [ 27382 Points ]

Should I turn this into under dispute about how the ps3 is getting screwed and the xbox isn’t? ;-)

Can they shut down the servers though? I know the servers are theirs but if I payed $60 for a game, I don’t care how you fix but you better not take away features from a game I paid $60 for or so.

  7. #7 by Eddie L. Headley on January 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

They can shut down the servers anytime they want Luke without repurcussions.

  8. #8 by Luke on January 19th, 2011

So no one is responsible for anything these days? If you are advertising the the game and all it’s multiplayer glory it better have it.

I understand when they shut down the servers because the game is old but this game is hardly old.

  9. #9 by Eddie L. Headley on January 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

Why keep it open when its full of auto aim bots and crap like that?

No, that has to do with p2p. The last I checked, COD does not use dedicated servers. Which is why I don’t play it. The lag is insane on these games.

When you buy a game you’re actually buying a license to use it, in the license it states they can shut down the server at any time they want as long as they give 30 days notice. By playing the game you have agreed to that.

Is it a dick move? Yes but unfortunately they’re well within their rights to do so.

  12. #12 by lordincubus on January 19th, 2011 [ 185 Points ]

I feel bad for Sony. They are doing their best to provide the best possible product and these A holes are screwing that up. Again I like black ops but I am worried about the future of the system.

How about those are their servers so they figure something out. You tell me they have no control over what goes on, on their servers?

I don’t know guys, I mean I see what your saying about they protected themselves by putting that in writing but this is a joke. It’s like saying her you bought this car but in the TOS something states I can take the care back from you when I feel like it. Even if your not breaking the law. Punish those that are screwing things up not does that follow the rules. I didn’t pay $60 for a game so the publisher can take the easy way out and screw me.

How is it avtivisions fault the ps3 was hacked? Nothing can be done period. Banning is the only option.

  15. #15 by Squirtbot on January 19th, 2011 [ 115 Points ]

Again, how does hacking come into play on the PS3? You can’t log onto the PSN with a jailbroken PS3 or if it’s not updated. So, how is it hacked precisely?

And tell me more about these “auto aim bots and crap like that”… Are people really re-writing codes and hacking the server with auto aim? I’ve never seen anybody with more then 35 kills. Before, the rumors get any crazier and everyone gets mad, please put a list together of how the Server is actually being hacked and what “crap like that” means.

I have so much fun playing this game, my only complaint is that it Lags and Disconnects.

  16. #16 by Eddie L. Headley on January 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

Actually as of right now, you can access PSN without any problems on a hacked PS3.

Aimbot was released in october http://ps3hacks.info/ps3-mods/call-of-duty-black-ops-jb-ps3-aimbot-first-jb-ps3-game-mod/

want the real kicker here….if Sony’s online service wasn’t free…this probably would never happen.

  17. #17 by premiersoupir on January 19th, 2011 [ 17020 Points ]

Source? This sounds like fear-mongering, espcially since, as you say, the homebrew scene is still in its infancy. I mean, a quick look at PS3News.com shows that people have done exciting things like get PEEK and POKE commands to work. This is lowest-level memory allocation stuff — just the merest baby steps. Or not steps, really — this baby has barely learned how to sit up, let alone crawl.

  18. #18 by Eddie L. Headley on January 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

The original source I believe was Gameindustrybiz but don’t quote me on that. what we have though are official quotes from Activision theirself. The standard cheating in Black Ops and more so Modern Warfare 2 can be found in both consoles. Why would activision pick on Sony only if they were referring to the standard cheats that were found?

  19. #19 by Squirtbot on January 19th, 2011 [ 115 Points ]

They should just make a new update that resets everyone back to square one and use better servers.

I can understand hacking a PS3 to play copied games, but why on earth would anybody want aimbots, unlimited COD cash points, etc… seems like it takes the fun out of playing.

Personally, I just wish they would fix the LAG and connection issues!

  20. #20 by Mike on January 19th, 2011

And people will still claim that hacking the PS3 is all about using Linux. Activision has already generated enough bad will in the past few years, a move like this would just confirm how terrible they are. And if cheating were a viable reason to yank the online portion of a game, the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 would have been shut down a year ago.

  21. #21 by premiersoupir on January 19th, 2011 [ 17020 Points ]

Yeah, but who’s quoting Activision? Anyway, I don’t know anything, as I’ve never played BOPS or MW2. Those of you who play these titles: You all are seeing aimbots, etc.?

  22. #22 by Abkanis on January 19th, 2011 [ 1064 Points ]

First off; my obligational “CoD sucks”

Seriously though; when Homebrew first reared its head, I was excited. the thought of using my PS3 as a desktop, or an internet browser that doesn’t suck.

But No. We get the douchebag Windows hackers bent on cheating, Rather than the useful linux whitehat hackers. I’m sure there’s a huge rant about the nature of humanity in here somewhere… But it doesn’t matter. Floodgates are open :’(

  23. #23 by Trieloth on January 19th, 2011 [ 3426 Points ]

Oh wait theres cheaters in Cod NOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo, thats impossible. /s
Oh well, i cant get myself to play the game anywho.

  24. #24 by Macdory on January 19th, 2011 [ 3435 Points ]

It’s not as though it’s okay on other platforms … both 360 and PC have their fair share of cheaters …

I had already made my mind up not to buy any more COD games – they are just milking teh franchise and giving very little back for extortionate pricing. There has been no innovation since COD4, and I would argue that it has actually gone backwards with the quality of the maps.

If they are so flippant to even suggest this sort of thing, then they do not deserve my money … especially if that money will be wasted with them switching off servers on a game that’s only a few months old. Add to that, the single player element is pants, and it’s only the multiplayer element that was ever worth playing …

  25. #25 by Luke on January 19th, 2011 [ 27382 Points ]

Well then SONY should be refunding people. I payed the $60 to play on their system, it better work.

What does the “it’s pants” comment mean? Been hearing that alot around the net lately.

misguided anger. hackers are your problem. blame them.

  28. #28 by derrickgott007 on January 19th, 2011 [ 871 Points ]

Don’t forget, when you pay $60.00 for a game, they consider that payment for the single player. The EULA agreement you agree to each time you go on states they can shit down servers at will with only 30 days notice. And they do it too. Try tomay any madden game that’s older than 3 years, it doesn’t go online because they took the servers down. NASCAR games are down too.

The developers consider multiplayer as a bonus to you, therefore they are not responsible for refunds if it taken offline.

Oops! Lol my iPhone decided to make excrement out of what was supposed to say “shut down servers”

    Warning! Harsh Language used. Sorry.
I read half way through everyones comment and stoppped here. But What I have to say is that, SONY needs to bann the faggots who are jailbreaking the PS3, and hacking into games and just ****ing it up for everyone else. The PS3 is suppose to be a Gaming device in which we take out time out of our busy lives. Some go to Multiplayer and waste countless hours. Sure we enjoy it, but where does the time go. Now If there are these fags who love to cheat and ****, why not just ban, them. There is no fun in cheating to get kills and ****, if you don’t have skills then grow them. Make them. And really there should be a petition to help SONY out with this LAWSUIT against the HACKERS who are releasing all this ****. (CAN THERE BE A PETITION?) I want to be able to play on my PS3 on friday nights multiplayer for games like BC2 Nam, And upcoming games like Killzone 3 Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3.
On another note. I alwasy thought that MS could be funding these Hackers in order to break the PS3. This is my theory, what else could they do.
And what I have to say **** all the ****ty ass geeks who have no time and or social lives and just want to hack a PS3 just to make a buck. GET A LIFE!
    But Seriously Petition?

  31. #31 by xDeFcoN_2FasT4Ux on January 19th, 2011 [ 2160 Points ]

Oh forgot to add that, the companies have the power to patch things, the servers them selves have their own security, Activision is on MS ****. Xbox has so many hacks, they put out banns and stuff, and look on youtube and you’ll see that all modded controllers are for 360 most of them, aim boot , lag switch, and rapid fire. Activision is just lieing to us, thy just dont want to spend the money to fix it. If 360 had it they’ll fix it.
Microsoft could be paying Activision to just pull COD from PS3 and make it an exclusive for 360. Simple. Look at BO right now. Its crap, patch after patch. It isnt fixed, its just get worse.

ye no more COD… that could be interesting

Honestly, i really dont care if they do or not, this could be just for attention and to get people from just stop hacking the game, but I mean think about it. This did cause a lot of stir, and MS is paing Activision.

Oly: WOW at you guys for even thinking they will shut down their servers.. lol that would end any and all future COD purchases for everyone..

That makes a lot of sense from the sales point of view.

Nobody would buy a game for multiplayer with the risk of having no multiplayer.

  37. #37 by Dave on January 28th, 2011

I am a level 50 on my first prestige. The cheat I have seen is when I shoot 3 rounds into a level 20 guy who has only logged 12 hours total play and nothing happens. But while on a full sprint, he kills me with 1 shot. He ended up 37-6 in domination. How many guys have you seen at level 20 and 12 hours of play get those kind of numbers? Activision and sony need to find the producers of these cheats and sue the crap out of them.

  38. #38 by brandon on April 21st, 2011

ok look i play ps3 and xbox and the only way xbox keeps hackers in check is by banning them people must be punished for cheating its the only way to prevent chaos and catastrophic events like these

  39. #39 by StevenMikel on September 16th, 2011 [ 120 Points ]

I know this is an old review but,I was searching for info about the cheating in C.O.D. Black Ops and founf this. The cheating is still going on and has gotten much worse. It seemed to get star in the middle of August and has got progressively worse,it seems like everybody is cheating and/or boosting. There are also alot of sexual emblems and emblems with drug references in them.I have contacted Activision and the Playstation Network about my concersns. The PS Network told me to contact Activision.Activision told me,they get thousands of complaints a day and have a limited number of moderaters to investigate the problems.I’m on the verge of getting rid of Black Ops and not buying anymore C.O.D. games or letting my kids play them.
