Cloud Game Saves

Kotaku reports that with official firmware v.3.60, Sony will enable online storage of game saves. (Finally an OFW update that provides a new feature set!) This frees up hard drive space, of course (though not much in principle), but the more exciting ramification of this is that one will be able to download one’s game saves to other consoles or even to the same console in case of hard drive failure.

Two caveats: This service will only be available to PS+ members, and Sony will allow game developers to opt out of the cloud system for their titles. I wonder how this feature will treat games with locked game saves. Will they be grandfathered in to the pool of those who opt out?

I keep hearing this saves HDD space. How so? Would they not just sync up but still kept on your machine for use…so only when changed they get copied up. I guess even so my ideas are just speculation. We’ll have to wait and see.

Well, who knows how it will work — it could potentially operate by saving and loading all one’s games to/from the cloud *instead* of using the HDD. This would be kind of silly as it would mandate an internet connection all the time. More probably, the idea would be that one could safely delete all of the savegames for games that one isn’t currently playing, knowing that they could be re-downloaded at a moment’s notice. But anyway, savegames typically range in size from a matter of kilobytes to a few megs, so we’re not talking about substantial space saving here.

It sounded really nice, until I read it would be a PS+ exclusivity….. :|
