MAG Statistics

Developer Zipper has released some macro-level player statistics for MAG (Massive Action Game), which just celebrated its first anniversary. The stats are rather fun: Players have put in over 5200 years’ worth of time into playing the game; 100,000 people have put more than 100 hours each into the game; and nearly as many people have achieved “veteran status” or are qualified to do so (which means that they have hit the level cap). Also, Zipper has announced that they will post a new patch, v2.11, next month, which promises “new optimizations and refinements.” Let’s hope that they will have finally hammered out the last niggling freezing bugs in Domination and Acquisition. Read the entire list of Zipper’s posted stats below.

PS Home Central Plaza Taken Over By Helghast

Just a reminder that this is now live. Luke posted about it earlier in the week, see his post for all the details. They did a great job making the central plaza look like a war zone. I tried out pre-ordering Killzone 3 threw home. Not sure when I’ll get the code for the Jet Pack Outfit though. I tried out the Central Plaza Defender and I wish I could invert the aiming, it really throws me off. But I finished the first level and almost got threw the 2nd before I had to leave for work. It’s pretty fun though, be sure to check it out.

PS3 FW 3.56

Sony released a mandatory firmware update (v3.56) late on Jan 26, 2011. The official description of the patch is typically coy: “A new PS3 system software update, v3.56, will be released soon. This is a minor update that adds a security patch.” The hacking community so far suggests that the patch blocks certain homebrew applications (but not others, such as many emulators), and it prevents easy firmware downgrading methods. Thus it effectively blocks people with hacked boxes from going online, as this would require updating to the latest firmware. It doesn’t sound like anyone believes that this update will stymie hackers for long.

New HD Trailer Of Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Square Enix has released a high quality trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII which was first shown on the 18th of the month during the 1st Production Department Premier event held in Japan. In the game you play as Prince Noctis who is accompanied by a few other guys whose duty is to protect Noctis.

According to details revealed from Director Tetsuya Nomura, Versus won’t have a job system like Final Fantasy X, for example. Also despite being able to switch between party members and control their actions if Noctis dies in the game it’s “Game Over”. There’s no date for when we’ll be able to play Versus but Nomura-san has stated that it won’t be this year. :(

Pre-Release NGP (PSP2) Video

Although nothing is revealed, it does tease that something is coming. Why we hadn’t seen this before the Tokyo reveal is beyond me.

“PlayStation Suite” Will Allow PlayStation Content on Android Smartphones and Tablets

Although overshadowed by the news of the NGP (PSP2), “PlayStation Suite” was just announced. PS Suite will be PlayStation’s first cross platform endeavor, “making PS content available on Android smartphones and tablets.”
Jeff Rubenstein, via a live Blog said that the “PS Suite provides a new framework that supports the development of games for portable devices,” and that “This new game framework is designed to attract as many developers as possible.”

It seems that although new development of games will be supported, PSX or PS1 games are likely to hit first, including those shown, Medievil ,Syphon Filter, Cool Boarders 2, Rally Cross, and Wild Arms .

“PlayStation Suite content is slated to be available within the next calendar year,” and will also be available on the NGP.
