MAG Turns One

Happy birthday MAG! Zipper has announced some special events in honor of MAG’s Jan. 26 first year anniversary. For four days, from Jan. 26 to Jan. 30, 2011, all XP bonuses (both happy hour and queue bonuses) will be increased to 256%. Also, MAG’s flagship modes, Domination (256 players) and Acquisition (128 players), will go faction-neutral during this time period. Clearly the odd change to neutral Acquisition maps for several hours yesterday, which we reported, was preparation for the upcoming event.

Furthermore, on Jan. 26 from 10 am – 5 pm PST, Zipper developers will be playing MAG, so hop online and kill some devs! The developers will also be posting special blog updates throughout the week with game statistics, secrets, and other articles.

Why don’t we all do Valor a favor and vet over there? You’ll level up fast, and you won’t be stuck defending Elk Bay in Acquisition for a few days. Or do Zipper a favor and buy one of the secondary character slots. If you do that, keep in mind that you are actually “renting” the slot for 0.99 USD/mo. (I didn’t realize that at first: I thought I bought the slot for my $0.99, but it turns out that PSN automatically auto-drafts that sum every month.)

Disney Restructures Into a Digital Only Publisher

According to VG247, Disney has restructured into a digital only game publisher. What does that mean for us? The future? Will other devs follow? I guess only time will tell, but its kind of odd since Disney is the reasons we can’t get Kingdom Hearts BBS on the PSP via PSN.

Blu-ray Releases for the Week of 1.25.11

I really enjoyed the movie “Red”. I wasn’t expecting much when I went into the theater. But it was a very fun movie, John Malkovich was very funny in it. I knew when I walked out of the theater this was a must buy for me. I stopped watching the Saw series after the 2nd one, just didn’t interest me anymore so let us know if the last installment was any good. Anything interest you this week?

Here are the Blu-ray titles for this week. Highlights are: Secretariat, Red (Special Edition), Red (Movie-Only Edition), The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, Saw: The Final Chapter, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dead Space: Aftermath, Color Purple, Open Season 3, Nature: Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom.

Final Fantasy Overflow. XIII-2, Versus, Type-0 New Info

Tons of info has been released for some up and coming Final Fantasy games. Some long overdue, some new. Today we have info for Final Fantasy XIII Versus, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0. The Versus news is very welcome as this game has just taken so long in development. Hopefully we get a 2011 release.

Final Fantasy XIII Versus

* The actual battle screen in the final game will show character names.
* Some areas regarding how the battle screen shows commands will probably change for the final.
* Magic has different effects depending on the character who uses it.
* A young blonde male character shown in the magazine’s screenshots is good with guns. He alone has aiming controls and can aim for enemy weak spots.
* When other characters use guns, they have just a normal lock-on.
* The game has a large number of weapons. Main character Noctis can use them all.
* Your battle party can have up to three members. However, the members who aren’t taking part in the battle will join in on conversations.
* There are more party members than the four shown in the magazine. However, the game doesn’t have a massive number of party members.
* Main character Noctis is not “cool.” He’s just a normal youth. He feels “I am strong,” but he’s not as strong as he thinks.
* Some segments of the trailer show natural landscapes. These are like the fields you encounter in other games. The game will have time progression: morning, afternoon, evening and night.
* Contrary to some theories, the dragon rider character who appears in the trailer is not heroine Stella. Nomura says he wouldn’t show Stella in such a state. The character you see in that sequence is an enemy.
* You can steal army vehicles for your use. You can ride air ships, cars and Chocobos.
* The blonde character shown in the trailer is Noctis’s friend. The other two characters are friends from Noctis’s childhood. The person with glasses is like Noctis’s tactician.
* You’ll recall that someone in the trailer says “You’re not fit to be king,” or something to that effect. This statement is not directed at Noctis. (I think everyone assumed it was!)
* Nomura says something along the lines of: This year, we have Type-0 and XIII-2, so please forget about Versus for a while. He asked that people be patient and understand that they’re trying to do something incredible.
* At the earliest, we could see more from Versus XIII at E3.

Avatars Galore Hit PSN Tomorrow!

Holy Avatars Batman! Sony just announced that a slew of avatars are going to be hitting the PSN tomorrow. Now there is no word on price but I have to admit these look pretty awesome. It would have been pretty cool if they added some other ones from Killzone or Demon’s Souls but this seems like a good start. For now the avatars are from the following games:”Tron: Evolution, Hoard, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood“.

Infinity Ward Security Meeting on PS3 Hacking

Infinity Ward just finished a security meeting that entails the hacks displayed on the PS3 version of games for both hacked and non-hacked consoles. Here is what FourZeroTwo had to say:

I just left a security meeting with the coders here at Infinity Ward where we discussed a lot of solutions. I feel good about the meeting, but of course I can’t go into detail on the possible solutions we discussed as we don’t want to give out any information that could potentially hinder the security any further.

Once I have more information, I will post it here.

The key factor I want you to know is, that while any update takes time, we are looking to make the process as quick as possible and nothing is being left unattended.

Our main focus right now is on:

1) Preventing hackers from affecting legitimate players.
2) Addressing users who have already been affected.

He also stated that some of the problems need to be reported to Sony as well, so if you see someone hacking their way to victory, be sure to report them to Sony using this link.

Silent Hill 8 Officially Named Silent Hill: Downpour to be Released Fall 2011

Konami officially released information on the next Silent Hill, stating that it was to be called Silent Hill: Downpour and that it would be released in the fall of 2011. It is also a completely original story. From the screenshots, this is looking to have great potential.

Silent Hill: Downpour starts as Murphy Pendleton, the game’s main character, finds himself lost and alone in the woods after his prison transport bus crashes near the town of Silent Hill. What happens after is up to the player as they traverse an all new Silent Hill environment that is expansive, yet claustrophobic. And though this sleepy town may feel desolate, the player is never truly alone.

The E3 trailer, and more pictures can be seen after the jump.
