NGP: A “Developer’s Dream” |

SCEE held a presentation for it’s Next Generation Portable at the company’s headquarters in London this week where around 20 developers from the UK were in attendance. During the event Sony shared details on the NGP’s launch plans, hardware specifications, networking features and more. According to a source at the event, and, as mentioned by Eddie, the “NGP is a developer’s dream.”  “Sony is finally doing the things developers have been crying out for for years” he/she added.

Some UK developers already have their hands on early dev kits for the new portable, with new kits featuring the system’s final GPU expected to ship soon. Another source who attended the presentation stated that “Sony has made it (the NGP) completely developer-centric this time. [The development kit] is really simple to plug in and use. It opens direct in Windows Explorer and you can see all systems on a network – so you could, for example, update the firmware of multiple NGPs at once.

For the NGP’s first year, SCEE revealed plans to focus on hardcore gamers, then expanding to “hardcore and teens” during the second year of the system’s life-cycle. Games targeted at younger/older audiences will be addressed down the road. Sony is also pushing for developers to create original games for the handheld that will warrant a purchase of the system.

SCEE  hasn’t announced a price for their new machine as of yet, but the company did hint at possibly two versions of the system releasing this year. During the presentation SCEE listed a wi-fi only edition of the NGP as “2011”, while the wi-fi plus 3G version was listed as “Holiday Season 2011”.

Fixed the post to credit Eddie’s earlier post on the first quote, but I kept the article up because it had a few more pieces of info

Ok, look forward to what the NGP can really do but taking the word of a game developer that mainly creates for Sony consoles/portables is like Sakurai saying that the 3DS is a great portable and that Smash Bros 4 will show the huge potential of the new system…
