Music Unlimited Hitting PS3 Today!

Later today, “Music Unlimited” is going to be added to the PS3, but that isn’t the only device. It’s also going to be hitting internet enabled BRAVIA TV’s, Blu-Ray Disc player’s, Sony VAIO’s, and other PC’s along with some other devices like the PSP down the road. It seems like this is going to be a pretty cool addition, access to 6 million music tracks from one device that lets you play games, stream TV shows or even sport games is really making the PS3 a one stop shop. The service is going to come in two flavors. One is going to cost you $3.99 a month and the other is going to cost $9.99. Obviously you are going to be getting some extra content with the $10 price tag as opposed to the $4 dollar one, but that choice is yours. It’s great that the service is going to be available for FREE for the first 30 days, I for one am not to crazy in trying something out just to find out I hate it. Nothing wrong with a little try it before you buy it, know what I mean? Anyways, enough of me, check out the video below to get the full experience:

Ok, for FREE I’ll be sure to at least try the service and we’ll take it from there.

What do you mean? There are over 6 million music tracks available. You telling me you won’t like any of them?

Wow, wait. I’m not such a pain in the ass.

I was just displaying a general disregard for the music industry these days.

Sure I could find many many things I like, that wasn’t really my point.

nice but it would be better if they add SATELLITE RADIO and let me listen while I am playing a game

Yeah, I was thinking that they should have something more like Pandora: free with conditions/ads/whatever. Or hey: just give us Pandora. Having it work in game would be a nice plus, but I prefer my own songlist for that. Building the perfect track collection (with no mood breakers) for games like N4S:HP is a must.

Not in Canada but in France, Germany, Italy, Spain,U.K. and Ireland. Another disappointment for us up north

Pretty damn impressed with it guys.

@Blue they haven’t implemented Xross Game Chat and you want Satellite Radio so you can listen while playing?

It’s impressive, but I can’t help but feel this is antithetical to the direction “music” as a consumable product has been going for the last decade. Music has been about portability since the second generation of iPods: Be rid of the shackles of bulky disks and get it in digital format, or streaming or satellite radio. Sure, this is portable, with the major caveat that it only works on supported Sony devices. So while it’s great at home, if I head to someone’s house without my PS3, and they don’t have one of the devices that support the service, my music is just as stuck as if I had it on a physical format.

It reminds me of Zune Pass, but the whole point of Zune Pass was to get music you could put on a portable device with one monthly license. This is ultimately restricted and really has no portability. Music from the cloud is great, but music from the cloud that’s restricted to certain specific devices… meh. Maybe if it had a function like MS has with Zune where it allowed downloading of tracks to a Sony Walkman MP3 player, I could see more function for this.

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but if it’s something I’m going to end up using mostly at home due to the Sony device restriction, I’d just as soon hit up Pandora Radio, or DI.fm, or just play anything from my disgustingly large MP3 library.

..and don’t forget the rootkit it will install on each device, along with disabling all disc drives which are not Mini-Disc, UMD, and all media slots which don’t read MS Pro Duo…

Sorry Sony, but I doubt anything you come up with is going to pull me away from my Zune and MY extensive MP3 collection which is NOT delivered from a single company. Plus, save for a number of songs I can count on ONE HAND, I have no interest in new music or artists, so as far as I can see right now, this is nothing worth me paying for or even really checking out for the 30 days. *yawn*

Good job following in M$’s footsteps and providing yet ANOTHER useless service / feature instead of something the posters on your forums are begging to be included in an update.

Booo! Not available in Canada? I wonder why that is… We are missing so much content on Netflix. Many of the major television networks won’t allow us to view their content either. It’s just weird. And rude! :P
