Risen 2: Dark Waters Revealed and This One’s Coming to the PS3

Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes officially revealed their new game Risen 2: Dark Waters this morning. This sequel to the 2007 Risen has been much anticipated by RPG fans everywhere since its announcement last year at Gamescom. Risen 2: Dark Waters will be another 3rd person RPG, that will have a Pirate theme. I expect to see lots of ship and water involvement in this one. This will be the German based Piranha Bytes first game for the PS3, which is known by RPG fans as the creators of Gothic 1, 2, and 3, as well as Risen. (The most recent Gothic game, ArcaniA, was developed by Spellbound.)

I never got to play Risen, but I did play Gothic 2 and 3, and they have been some of my favorite RPGs ever. I’m really looking forward to this one and will keep you informed with any new info as soon as we get it.

See below for more details and screens.

The Weekly Recap (February 13th-19th)

Recap

I would have had this up Saturday if my back wasn’t hurting so bad. I am enduring the pain as I write this recap this week, all for you guys :P . Anyway, I was gone part of the week, so I missed a few articles myself (I don’t have a laptop or a smart phone or anything, so I was not able to come visit while I was out of town).

With that said, what about some highlights? The week started off with news that Killzone 3 has been leaked to bittorrent sites (which actually happened later in the week before). In an effort to curb hacking and piracy, Sony has been warning users that continued use of custom firmware will result in their accounts/systems being banned from using the PlayStation Network. There is also talk that some CFW could steal your credit card info if you purchase from the store using a credit/debit card. In other words, don’t use custom firmware. You’re more than likely going to screw yourself over.

We’ve had a decent collection of reviews this week; Mass Effect 2, Killzone 3, the Undergarden, etc. I still need to pick up Mass Effect 2, and Killzone 3 is also near the top of my list. To think that the rest of 2011 isn’t going to slow down on great releases (I also need to pick up LBP2 still)…

Dead Island has made a lot of heads turn with a forward/reverse trailer revealed earlier in the week, and the surfacing of a few screenshots a little later. Although zombie games seem to be a bit overdone this generation, this one looks pretty interesting. Now only if we had some gameplay footage. Also, congrats to Aubrey for getting the PR spot at Deep Silver. For those who don’t know who she is, she was the one who made a few of our game giveaways possible.

Be sure to check out the rest of the articles, though. There’s a lot more to be had! Also, be sure to check out the new Poll!

Community News & Game Nights

The only real new feature is the ability to more easily PM people in the Live Chat. Basically, you just highlight the person you want to PM, then hit the PM link under the chat window. You can also type out the name, and just put @@ in front of it, as that’s all this does anyway, and that’s always been the way to do it.

Be sure to vote in this week’s poll as well, so we can gauge public interest in us having a weekly podcast.

The winners of the Blimp giveaway have been chosen, so congratulations to those who won! This week, I will be setting up a giveaway for some swag I got from my recent trip to a developer Plano. Be sure to read about what game I played this Friday, as well as details for the giveaway!

GT5 tournament is still on hold, seeing as I haven’t gotten anything about my PS3 yet. With that said, we did have a Game Night for Metal Gear Online, in which you can read the recap of that event here.

Poll Results

Given the results for last week’s poll, it is pretty clear that 3D on the PSP2/NGP isn’t a huge deal amongst gamers, and it’s not even due to the potential increase in the price of the handheld, which was only a small portion of the total “No” answers. Now to see if the general public as a whole agrees when it releases later this year.

New Poll

No one posted any new ideas for a poll this week, so I decided to make my own again (I know a few of you already put some down that haven’t been used, but either they are outdated at this point, don’t make any sense or we already had similar ones in the past). This time, it’s for a new feature, and possible activity driver.

Personally, I think it’s something we should get more serious about and have a weekly show, but I need to get some gear in order to do one. I know Ace is interested in co-hosting. Hopefully it becomes the real deal, but we need to see how interested you guys would be in listening to it. We also could use some ideas for the show, but I am aiming for a 15-30 minute run time if we do decide to do this.

NGP Price Rumor £250

Today, stingygamer.com became not so stingy with letting this little rumor fly about the pricing strategy of the NGP/PSP2 in the UK. The insider points out that recommended pricing will be around £250. For comparison, the 3DS is set to sell for £220. This would be a very competitive pricing point for the NGP over seas. If true, this could solidify the hope for $299 in North America.

Killzone 3 Review

The British Space Nazis are coming! But don’t worry, Sev and Rico are on hand to quell their invasion by ignoring orders, shooting a lot and using a variety of vehicles to well shoot a lot more. It may aspire to be like a gritty war movie but it actually shares more in common with a classic buddy flick. Sev and Rico are like a videogame equivalent of Tango & Cash, Riggs & Murtaugh or even Neal & Del from Planes, Trains & Automobiles as they journey across Helghan via, Tanks, Exoskeletons, Infiltrators and whatever else they can get their hands on. Heck they even scream in unison whenever they crash each said vehicle… which is pretty much every time they get in one. I kept expecting one of them to quip “I’m getting too old for this sh*t”! Thankfully they are not but is Killzone 3 in the zone or a helghastly abomination of a videogame that ought to be killed?

Saints Row 3 Images Leaked

The internet is a buzz with leaked images of what is rumored to be the next Game Informer cover. Saints Row 3. If you look at the pictures it all comes into play as the pictures would be a front and back cover if viewed side by side. None the less we will treat this as a rumor until I get my next shiny Game Informer.

“1979″, A Game about the Iranian Revolution, May Be the Most Intriguing Game Idea of 2011

1979: The Game

I can see my least favorite television host, Glenn Beck, dedicating 60 minutes just about this game. About how it’s “Islamic propaganda to help the caliphate overthrow America with Obama’s/Pelosi’s/Reid’s help and turn our children into Satanic gays!”

In all seriousness, 1979 is nothing except an idea. And a logo. Evidently, the gameplay will consist of a “combination of sandbox and strategy elements”. Regardless on where you stand on American foreign policy, particularly toward Iran, the title certainly sounds intriguing.

In an interview with Joystiq, creator Navid Khonsari said 1979 will take on the Iranian Revolution “from various perspectives”. So, I assume it will include various campaigns with Americans/Other Western Military, Iranian revolutionaries and/or Iranian loyalists. The siege and hostage-taking in the US Embassy in Tehran will be a central part of the game, with three distinct ways to get into Iran to free the hostages at the embassy.

Khonsari aims for a console release, although 1979 is hardly more of a concept at this point. He said that 1979 will “include three distinct sandbox environments.” Multiplayer will also be a part of the game, but the single player (which is just rumors right now) already sounds immensely intriguing.

Khonsari is taking inspiration from Grand Theft Auto III, Bully, and Alan Wake – two games I know are awesome and one I believe is. He also aspires to self-publish the game (which is semi-expected, as it’s hard to see Activision or EA wanting anything to do with a title that could be incredibly controversial.)

Thoughts on 1979? Is this just a GTA clone with an interesting plot? Or a classic game that will be a must-buy on it’s release date?
